    Recommend a motherboard.

Basically I have a gigabyte DS3. I have a few niggly issues with it. First the sata raid is rubbish...then it's really fussy about RAM. For example no matter what it wouldn't take 4gb of RAM (tried different bios).

I'd like to keep the board under £150 if possible. I like the look of Asus boards but are the Abits any good?

Edit: Or should I buy another set of 4gb and try and get it to work?

    Re: Recommend a motherboard.

I've done a build with the Abit IP-35 and its a great motherboard.

Lovely layout and build quality. The RAID was top notch.. never done it before and it took me about 3 seconds to sort that out..couldn't have hoped for a better board really. Took 14 minutes from first boot >> setup RAID >> format and install vista >> sat on the desktop >> browser open looking for new drivers (quad core, 4gb ram, 64bit etc )

There are a few niggles with them, the infamous double boot before it posts (check out the abit care forum for more details) they are working on bios fixes for all of them anyway and none of them actually affect thre performance of the board which is great.

    Re: Recommend a motherboard.

As it wasn't for me I didn't get a chance to do much overclocking but even the cheapest E version has been proved quite effective for overclocking so I have no doubts that the PRO version (~£120) would be fantastic.

less than 14 minutes for a vista install? hmmm.

I cant speak for the Abit board, bu the P35 Asus boards work well with 4GiB and also overclock well.

With 4GiB of RAM, your overclock may be slightly less than it was before, but it will depend on what CPU you have. A CPU with a higher multi is a bit better here, simply because it puts less stress on the chipset.

    Saying that, I can still run 4x 1GiB at 1250Mhz 5-5-5-15 , but for 24/7, I run it at 3.2Ghz CPU and 1080Mhz RAM 4-4-4-12.

I'll be looking at running 6400 ram at 400mhz (400*7 for an E6300).

    Re: Recommend a motherboard.

About 4 months ago I bought 4*1gb sticks of corsair 6400 55512. With all four sticks in a DS3 it would throw up memtest errors (the ram was tested fine when sent back for a refund). I tried extra volts (up to 2.3) although I may have forgot to try extra MCH voltage, canney remember. Currently I have 4*512 sticks of geil 6400 ram and it just won't run at 44412 (fails orthos blend).

Afaik P965, 975X and nvidia 650i don't support 4 sticks at higher than 667 Mhz.

    Yeah, PC2-5300/5400.

    Do the P5K boards?
Think it can yes, P35 chipset has an improved memory controller, would ask Asus to confirm.

    Re: Recommend a motherboard.

if you are looking at SATA RAID the P5K series seems to have numerous reports on forums of RAID problems.
The IP35 Pro would suit you nicely (or dare I say that the Gigabyte DS3P/DS4/DQ6 will too - the RAID on the DS3 is via the crappy JMicron rather than ICH9R) or for less money (& fewer features) the IP35 will for £85.
Unfortumately, Scan are currently out of stock of all 3 abit IP35 boards as they are very popular.

Hmm...I may just keep 2gb and the rest of my system minus the cpu and go with quad core. I've got the upgrade bug :E
