    Problamatic Build - won't Overclock

    *Sigh*

    The story begins...

Basically got all my kit a few months back, which consisted of:

    E4300 (Stock cooling)
    DS3 Rev 3.3 (F10 BIOS)
    X1950XT
    Hiper Type R 580w PSU
    Antec P182
    160GB SATA HDD
    2 x DVDRW drives (1 SATA, 1 IDE)
    2GB Hynix 667 RAM

And Ive been having a hell of a lot of trouble OCing the b*****d

In Gigabyte BIOS Ive disabled things like EIST, boosted CPU vCore to 1.425, Multiplier to 9, FSB to 312, PCI-E to 100, RAM @ 624 and 2.00v and it won't boot into Windows (well It might do but there's no output to display so I cant tell)

I then changed out the X1950XT for a 7900GS and the Hiper PSU for a Coolermaster iGreen 600w one. Im still having the same problems

Anyone got any suggestions ? (Ill get detailed BIOS settings tommorow)

P.S. with 1st configuration would boot at 2.7 but PCI-E lane was set to 105MHz and wouldn't keep the OC

Edit that language out..the mods won't be impressed

maybe you just have a poor cpu if you're having problems overclocking passed 2.7..

not a big fan of gigabyte boards i'd be tempted to blame that

I'll bet that you started off with the RAM set at 667Mhz and have overclocked, and it has got to its limit before it should have done.

Set it to 1:1, and it should let you get to around 3Ghz.

Sorry, edited now, thought the forums would automatically block it out.

And I would of thought the E4300 would of hit 2.7GHz easily or at least booted with extra vCore etc

I hadn't thought of RAM, I have some Crucial XMS2 lying around (667 as well) shall I try that or go straight for 1:1 ?

hadn't seen the ram.. even so at 1:1 you should get over 3.0ghz before clocking the ram

Go for 1:1 first - This is more than likely it.

But if he had started off with it at 667Mhz, and then overclocked, and the RAM did in fact only go to around 667Mhz, then what he is seeing is right. If he goes 1:1 and then does his overclock, it should give him that bit extra.

Re: Problamatic Build - won't Overclock

    *Sigh*

Put FSB to 334 and RAM at 2.0 (Gigabytes version of 1:1) and it got into POST with a display, yay I thought, it's finally gonna work, but then display goes blank before Windows XP loading bar comes up and system restarts.

Tried FSB at 312 and RAM at 2.0 again and back to the old problem of no display at all.

    Next step = ?

Re: Problamatic Build - won't Overclock

Ok, well, assuming that your timings and voltages for the RAM are correct.....

I would be testing the RAM at this point. Firstly, try it in the other slots.

Next try it one stick at a time, and test with memtest v1.70 test 5 for at least an hour on each stick.

Re: Problamatic Build - won't Overclock

Do you think Ive killed them ? I've had them at +0.2v since Ive had them pretty much (so around 4 months-ish)

    Will go and Memtest now

Re: Problamatic Build - won't Overclock

Its just a possibility. For me, its the best way of testing, by ruling things out. All your symptoms point to RAM at the moment, and memtest should tell you if it is or it isnt

So, +0.2v would make them run at 2.0v - is that what they are supposed to run at? And what about the timings? Try 5-5-5-15. Unless you set them manually, the RAM will be using the timings from the SPD table, which are most likely 4-4-4-12, which would need more voltage to do your overclock. That is assuming that your RAM responds to extra voltage

Re: Problamatic Build - won't Overclock

Yep, they were at 2.0v, sometimes 4-12 and sometimes 5-15. Tbh I can't really remember what settings Ive had them on as Ive been changing everything for a day or two, then just leaving it for like a month as I couldn't be bothered.

Memtest is 24 minutes in atm, Im running it on both sticks in the slots they were in originally at stock volts (1.8), stock timings (5-15), stock speed (667) with the CPU at original speed (1.8GHz), stock FSB (200) and the memory at 3.33

No passes yet but no errors either.

No passes? It shouldnt take 24 mins to do a pass. You are using memtest v1.70 test 5?

Re: Problamatic Build - won't Overclock

Memtest 1.65 (I had it on a ubuntu disc), Its just looping through all tests (including 5). 1hr45mins gone and 3 passes no errors.

Do you want me to get 1.7 instead, select test 5 and do a stick at a time ?

    EDIT:

2 hours in and it had done 4 passes 0 errors. Restarted PC and put RAM at stock volts (1.8) and timings (5-15), FSB at 334, 1:1 divider, RAM at 668MHz and vCore of CPU at 1.4.

Display in POST but restarts before getting to windows load screen.

Tried setting CPU down to 1.375v but same happened.
