    New Build For Uni

I want to buy a PC to last me through uni, since I expect to be skint from here on in... so I've convinced myself this means I may as well get something really nice now. I've considered a laptop, but I can't find anything that I could game on in the future (but am open to suggestions). Here's what I'm considering right now:
    Silverstone SUGO SST-SG03-B Black Micro-ATX Aluminum Case £71.00 £83.43
    500 Gb Samsung HD501LJ Spinpoint T, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.9 ms, NCQ £52.89 £124.29
    Intel Core 2 Quad-Core Q6600 G0 SLACR, 95W, S775, 2.40 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 8MB Cache, Retail £147.99 £173.89
    2GB (2x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12, EPP £56.64 £66.55
    Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R iG33 Express, S775, PCI-Ex16, DDR2 1066/667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, uATX, VGA £51.00 £59.93
    Silverstone SST-NT06 Lite NT06 w/o 120mm fan. w/o fan controller AM2 RoHS £22.00 £25.85
    500W Silverstone ST50EF-Plus-SC super silent, 80 PLUS, short cable v.1 ROHS £49.99 £58.74
    768Mb ScanFX 8800GTX PCI-E (x16), Mem 1800MHz, GPU 575MHz, Dual-Link DVI-I OEM £247.00 £290.23
    22" Daewoo L2200MD ,Black , Widescreen ,5 ms , DVI/VGA ,1680x1050 ,1000:1 ,Speakers £129.00 £151.58
    Total: £1,050.74

I'd appreciate any comments/suggestions asap, since I'm saving a hell of a lot on 'today only'. Especially would like comments re. the quality of that monitor (worth £50 to get a samsung instead?), and whether it is worth going for a full size ATX case / mobo.
Just trying to avoid buyers remorse.

    Re: New Build For Uni

    Looks like a nice build

A few things.. the sugo only fits a GTX if you take the hard drive cage out so you will need some sort of 5.25" to 3.5" adapter so it can go in the second optical bay. Or get the GTS which will fit no problems and is perfect for a 22" screen anyway.

i'd be careful withthat HSF.. it isn't actually very good.
Something like a thermaltake blue orb should be better or zalmans downward facing fan design HSF's

It is a lovely case but air flow could be better. This is a great uATX

    http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/...cat=709&page=1

3x 80mm extractors and a 120mm intake. It also has more room for a bigger HSF to keep that quad core cooler.

The other good thing is it has a hinge in the middle so the top half can be open up and away from the case to make it easier to work with.

    Re: New Build For Uni

I think you're thinking of the SG01/2 where you have to remove the hard drive cage to install a GTX, the SG03 will fit one, barely. ://sg.vr-zone.com/articles/Silverstone_Sugo_SG-03_Review/4933-8.html (readd the http)
Most of the reviews I've read have said it has good airflow, for an mATX.
Is a GTX worth the extra for 1680x1050?
Any other suggestions for a HSF less than 85mm high?

    Re: New Build For Uni

Sorry dude my bad. the SG03 is fine for the gtx yeah..

one thing to be careful of with that case is the lack of an extractor fan on the back. great looking thing though

Is space that tight for the HSF in the SG03?

    try this one

    http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/product_in...oducts_id=4666

EDIT: i see now why the space is tight.. same problem with the sg01/2

The GTS i prefect at 1680 x 1050 that what i use mine at.. and i've never lowered a setting in any game.

GTX may give you a little extra life over the 4 years though..its hard to say at this point.

    Re: New Build For Uni

I've decided to go for the TJ08 instead. It's thinner, only 2cm taller, and quite a bit deeper, but i don't mind, because it can fit a thermalright ultra extreme in it, and I can't find a good cooler that fits the sg03 at all, at least not one suitable for low temps with a Q6600.

    So here's my latest plan:
    Cherry G86-21070GBAAAC CyMotion Master Linux Wired Keyboard, PS2/USB 1.1/2.0, Black £19.34 £22.72
    Intel Core 2 Quad-Core Q6600 G0 SLACR, 95W, S775, 2.40 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 8MB Cache, Retail £147.99 £173.89
    768Mb ScanFX 8800GTX PCI-E (x16), Mem 1800MHz, GPU 575MHz, Dual-Link DVI-I OEM £247.00 £290.23
    22" Daewoo L2200MD ,Black , Widescreen ,5 ms , DVI/VGA ,1680x1050 ,1000:1 ,Speakers £129.00 £151.58
    Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R iG33 Express, S775, PCI-Ex16, DDR2 1066/667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, uATX, VGA £51.00 £59.93
    Pioneer DVR-112DBK 18x DVD±R, 10x DVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RW x6, IDE, Black, OEM £14.50 £17.04
520W Corsair HX V2 Series Modular PSU, ATX, EPS12V, whisper quiet, 5 year warranty + Xclio PSU and P £52.99 £62.26
    2GB (2x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12, EPP £56.64 £66.55
    2 x 500 Gb Samsung HD501LJ Spinpoint T, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.9 ms, NCQ £52.89 £124.29
Silverstone TJ08B uATX aluminium tower chassis, black w/o PSU
    Scythe S-FLEX SFF21F (1600RPM) £12.50
    Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme £43.97
    Razer Deathadder 1800dpi 3G Infrared Sensor £36.93
2m DVI-D to DVI-D Monitor Cable (for TFT Monitors) Premium Signal Quality £2.89 £3.40
    Total : 1140.16

    Good to go?

Any further comments? Even if it's just 'Yeah, that looks fine'. Otherwise the orders going in, before I lose todays specials (1/2 my basket is in there today) Please do not suggest improvements on monday

    Re: New Build For Uni

tbh i would go for a 8800gts 640mb for that resolution, although you realise the there will be a new set of nvidia card due around november....maybe be best getting a cheap card and then get the new line of cards on release, but your choice like

Jesus did not have wheel Ralph...

    Re: New Build For Uni

I don't get your motherboard choice, a P35 based board would be more suitable considering you are including a graphics card.

    Re: New Build For Uni

I've decided to go with the evga 8800gts 640mb, with a view to hopefully taking part in their step up program in november. I would have like to wait for the 9800, but I'm not sure I can stand 3 months on integrated graphics. I went for the mobo because I wanted mATX, and almost every single mATX mobo has IGP. G33 is probably exactly the same piece of silicon as P35 anyway, so I hear.

Exactly my plan ... though it was blown slightly by me giving in to the temptation of a 22" widescreen.
