Can low fan RPM's cause a shut down?

Recently I was trying out the 'quiet' profile on the Uguru tool from Abit. When it started, my CPU fan dropped to 300RPM. Then, it started warning and the 300RPM turned red. The case fans sped up, but the CPU temp stayed at 27C, no problem. I wanted to see whether under low load conditions, I could do this with the fan, without a temp increase to save power and lifespan. The temp stayed at 28C. However, seconds later, the PC decided it would shut vista down, and turn off. I am afraid it may have been a cpu temp surge that may have done it (and extremely quick one), so I just wanted to make sure here.

you may have exceeded max temp shutdowns ( if set or available in BIOS)

What HSF (heatsink) do you have?

It's quite possible that the CPU (or BIOS setting - more likely and at a lower temp) did a thermal shutdown. Just keeps your hardware safe

yes, it's possible for low fan rpms to cause a shutdown.
You can disable that in uGuru.

Ah, ok. Thankyou guys!! I thought it might have been a bit quick for the temp to jump 40C.

BTW, I was using the 9700 from Zalman.
