Any critisism welcome for Quad setup

    Goodevenink folks

Sick and tired of waiting for the new Intels to come out and my fingers are itchy
I've been waiting ages to build a quad sysytem and with the new GO revision I think I am ready.

I know basically what I want but if anyone can point something out that seems daft then please do:

    1: Antec P182

    2: 720w Enermax Infinity

    3: 2GiB PC6400 Corsair TwinX XMS2 (perhaps the PC8500 instead)

4: P5K Deluxe/ Wifi-AP (they seem to have them back in stock @ Scan, but now call it the Premium)

5: Stock 8800Gtx or perhaps the BFG 8800Gtx OC (price has dropped considerably)

    6: Creative Xfi Xtreme Gamer

7: Dont know what screen yet, not done much research on that yet

8: Q6600 GO (can't resist anymore at that price)

    9: Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme

10: Some Yates for the front, wanna keep it fairly smooth and quiet

I want to OC the Quad and get about 3.0Ghz, I know all PC's are different but I should have a fair chance.

    Thanks for your time

I know basically what I want but if anyone can point something out that seems daft then please do:

    1: Antec P182 Dunno

    2: 720w Enermax Infinity Great

    3: 2GiB PC6400 Corsair TwinX XMS2 (perhaps the PC8500 instead) Ballistix

4: P5K Deluxe/ Wifi-AP (they seem to have them back in stock @ Scan, but now call it the Premium) The premium isnt the same - the P5K deluxe is available from loads of places.

5: Stock 8800Gtx or perhaps the BFG 8800Gtx OC (price has dropped considerably) Get a stock one for the cheapest price and flash it with an OC bios or overclock it.

6: Creative Xfi Xtreme Gamer Ugh.

7: Dont know what screen yet, not done much research on that yet

8: Q6600 GO (can't resist anymore at that price) Great.

9: Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme - Ideally needs a fairly powerful fan to get the best from it, so not the quietest.

10: Some Yates for the front, wanna keep it fairly smooth and quiet

I want to OC the Quad and get about 3.0Ghz, I know all PC's are different but I should have a fair chance.

Re: Any critisism welcome for Quad setup

Ok, thought Scan has mislabelled the Deluxe as a Premium, good thing I checked then cos it looks the same when browsing

Ballistix is great, only problem is the only place I know where to get that from is Overmydeadbody.uk

Well I need the Soundcard to play games, indeed the onboard would do but I like the crispy sounds..to be crispy, and the X-fi sounds great for music cos I already have 1 in my kids rig.

Will probably get a Scythe on the HS, was just thinking Yates for the case. Btw at what speeds do the Yate D12SL-12's run at ie whats their highest Rpm, don't see it on Chilled Pc and too tired to search and I know someone will know

    Misco.

If you are happy with the other x-fi, then go for it.

Much appreciated, and so much less than the Corsairs, brilliant! Is Misco a good/reliable place (with RMA etc) I haven't heard them being mentioned alot here?

Found the Rpm's of the Yates, 1350 +/- 10% if anyone was wondering

Mico are fine, very quick delivery. Admittedly, I havent needed to return anything to them, but I have recently done and RMA with Crucial and it was the fastest ever - Posted dead RAM back to them tuesday morning and received the new RAM back here on thursday morning.

I've got another set to do this week, so hopefully that will be as quick.

Yate loon do some other speeds as well, look here.

So with Crucial you have to send it to them, thats alright

That jab-tech is has some great stuff, bookmarked, Thanx. Ever used them though and do you have to pay import taxes?

I've used them many times, and they are pretty good. So far, there hasnt been any import duty or VAT, but I think thats luck more than anything

It can take about 2 weeks for larger packages to arrive, but one time, I ordered some stuff from scan, and some fans from jab-tech on saturday, and the stuff from jab-tech got here an hour before the stuff from scan most of the time, its a couple of weeks though.

Re: Any critisism welcome for Quad setup

Good stuff, so within two weeks I'll be pestering you with my quad and why it won't reach 3.6Ghz

Nah I don't expect that much, not with air anyways. I still have that Cpu block you sold me, sitting nicely in the draw doing bugga all. Gave up on Wc as I don't really have the time/patience. And after reading the kerfuffle you had with MM which is what I was going to get but forget that now.

With the G0 stepping and good MB's like the P5K etc it seems you can get a really good OC on a Quad even with air, and not too much RMA'ing

Well, the watercooling is a good idea if you want to do a bigger overclock.

Mountain mods, I wouldnt recommend to anyone, aside from the unforgivable build quality, their customer service and constant lies / selective memory was a complete nightmare as well. Unfortunately, there is more bad news to come regarding that case

I'm still waiting to see any real evidence that the G0 cores overclock better in general than the B3, or run cooler for that matter.

Anandtech did a review here, dont know how much you trust them but it is interesting. Was done on a Q6700 though, but obviously same G0 stepping

I've got some Ballistix on order from Dabs and found them to be the cheapest place at £77.80 for 2GB PC6400 as opposed to £82.93 from Misco. Not a big difference but was ordering something from Dabs anyway so the shipping wasn't so bad. Both anyway work out cheaper than OcUK at £90.46.

I ordered the P5K Deluxe from Komplett at £129.96 which seemed the best deal at the time. Delivery ended up very fast.

Its not that I dont trust them, but its only when I've seen the evidence first hand, or from many sources that I'll believe it

I can't see that there's that much difference between a late B3 and an early G0 in terms of heat and overclocking performance.

Harkin, unless you are going for super high FSB speeds, PC6400 will probably do you fine. If you are running Vista, you won't necessarily get the benefit of the X-Fi, as all the EAX stuff doesn't work properly under Vista (new driver model, etc). I think the on-board sound is pretty good and there's a digital out, so with a good amp and speakers, you'll probably be fine with the on-board. You could suck it and see? If you don't like it, then shell out on the X-Fi.

I'd agree with Clunk though, Crucials fantastic RMA service makes it worth buying their RAM.

    Cheers,
    Stephen

I would be careful about buying that motherboard with an 8800GTX. I ordered a system from SCAN like that, and it was delayed because of a clearance issue involving the SATA ports, apparently only half of them are available because of the length of the card.

    Just a little heads-up dude.

I have the same motherboard and a GTX and all the SATA sockets are usable. You just have to use an angled cable on one of them.

The 8800 Ultra would be more of a problem.
