Why is the Asus P5KC so cheap?
Hi, I am helping upgrade my sister's PC and we're looking for a system balancing performance and budget. The Asus P5KC is cheaper than most other motherboards but has both DDR2 and DDR3 support.
We were thinking about getting the Gigabyte GA-P35T-DQ6 for a Dual Core system but if this one is better and £30 cheaper....
Anyway, the point of the thread is.... what's wrong with the P5KC that it's that much cheaper with more features?
Re: Why is the Asus P5KC so cheap?
Don't know why its cheaper, but personally I wouldnt get a board that has both type Rams. Maybe ppl aren't buying them and so its cheap. I really don't get why they even bothered with that board. If you have the money to splash on DDR3 I can't see why you would need the other sockets. Plus it takes up extra space on the motherboard etc.
But thats just my 2p
Why not try the P5K-E, just a bit more expensive but better
Re: Why is the Asus P5KC so cheap?
Its to leave you enough for the deposit on a mortgage for the DDR3 :D

And the timings: 9-9-9-24  I know it probably won't make much difference, its just funny. Plus at that price its a joke
Re: Why is the Asus P5KC so cheap?
We were just thinking about what if 2 or 3 years DDR3 is loads better and the option's there without having to get basically another new system. Which motherboard is best in general in the £100 mark? DDR2 only I suppose.

Yes, if you look at it that way then it does make sense. The way I look at it is that in 2-3 years computers change ALOT, and therefore its not worth planning that far ahead. Also depends what your sister uses the pc for. If its just simple browsing and MSN etc then I wouldn't even bother with DDR3

which features do you need/want (firewire, RAID etc.)?
Re: Why is the Asus P5KC so cheap?
It's going to be a totally new system. The computer needs to be fairly powerful and quiet as it's going to be for recording musical instruments. I think quad core and super fast ram would be overkill though. It needs firewire for an external soundbox. Just basically looking for a decent board tbat will do for the next 3 or so years. No overclocking needed, it loks too complicated and scary (don't want to buy any more expensive components if they burn out due to overclocking inexperience!)
Re: Why is the Asus P5KC so cheap?
In P35 chipset mobos that means abit IP35, Asus P5K/P5KC, Gigabyte P35-DS3P etc.
As for your initial question the P5KC really isn't that highly specified e.g. it has the ICH9 rather than the ICH9R that the abit & Gigabyte have.
975X is still the quickest chipset clock for clock if you won't be overclocking.

Because it comes with ASUS's level of shockingly bad support.
Not that I'm bitter or anything....
