Mobo buzzer/speaker - stockists?

Anyone know where I can buy one of these from?



I bought an Antec 900 & was not impressed to discover no speaker or buzzer, making it impossible to hear POST codes.

So far I've had no luck in tracking the above down. Best I could find was 100 of them being auctioned on eBay from the US

You could try maplin. I think the pin spacing is standard so any free socket with that pin spacing would do the job.

I looked online at Maplin, RS & Farnell. Maybe I was searching for the wrong thing.

Oh, Clunk, while I've got your ear... was it one of your Q6600 posts where I read advice on steadying the Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme? Any chance of a link or reminder? It has something to do with wedging material between the sink & retaining bracket? Would a piece of foam from the mobo packaging do?

I did find those but as I didn't know the spec (not even the voltage) I didn't know which, if any, was suitable.

I was hoping for something already with a socket & which wouldn't require mounting on the case - iow one of the small buzzers, rather than a speaker.

I've just had a look in a couple of old machines & no luck with a buzzer, but I have ripped out a speaker & lead/socket. Figure I'll drill a few small holes in the bottom of the case & mount the speaker with a hot glue gun over the holes under the lower drive cage. I want to get this sorted today if possible.

I'd still be interested in a mountless solution as in the original pic, if anyone has a source or can confirm the spec needed to make ones own up.

Think I've been putting off getting on with my build as I'm anxious about screwing something up. I haven't spent this much on a PC in about ten years & somehow that makes a big difference - £700 vs my usual £200-300 budget machine. Odd.

Anyhow, off to screw something up now with a Dremel - wonder what I can with that?

well if the case is steel the speakers going to hold with its magnet? if not just tie wrap it in a corner out the way for now?

Could do I suppose, but a few small holes in the base won't do any harm & hot melt glue is easily removed from metal if I want rid of it.

I doubt that a buzzer woudl work - mobos are designed to generate a 'buzzing'/bleeping noise by feeding an AC signal to the speaker. A buzzer would require a DC signal. (to just switch it on or off.)

Understood. Sorry, the problem was one of terminology. I referred to the item as a buzzer as it often gets described as that. What I meant was a micro speaker of the kind in the original picture as opposed to a cone type speaker of 5 to 10 times the size. I realise they're both actually speakers. Thanks for pointing this out though. Shame I don't seem to be able to change the original post title.

At least that explains why I couldn't find it - part of a mobo testing kit.

Well, I've finished drilling holes in my case, I hope. I had to make a couple to attach a cable tie to hold the peskey 2x4 12V power lead out the way, so I made the speaker holes too. It's now glued down & seems to work. Sweet single beeps atm, thankfully.

I thought that the Maplin kit has a short lead buzzer from the pics at Maplin.
mroz, can you clarify on that as it seems you purchased the kit? Not had the chance to get down to Maplins.

Would you have to ground the buzzer or attach it to the case, as the lead seems short. Wait a minute, wouldn't the connector ground it via the motherboard?

Could I just leave the buzzer loose in the casing, the buzz would be audible.

I've not bought it - used a pc speaker ripped out an old machine. But the pic on the Maplin page show it to be exactly what you're after as does the product description. You can see the connectors - they'll just plug straight onto the pins on the mobo. No other connections necessary & no speaker flopping about in your case. Go for it

Edit: Yes, that's right - the speaker will just sit inside yor case about an inch above the pins on the mobo. You will still hear it even when the case is closed.
