What do you mean it doesn't play them very clearly? What software are you using?
You won't notice a lot of difference between that and a decoder card unless you connect it to your TV.

when i had my 8500le the picture quality was far clearer. now it looks grainy,
i don't know if that makes any sense
Which software? PowerDVD?
Radeons are usually better image quality than nVidia cards.
I'm not entirely sure how a decoder card interfaces... Does it pass through the monitor with the graphics card or something..?

i'm using windvd.
DVD cards do not have their own monitor output usually.
The old one I had was linked to the graphics card via a small cable. The card itself only had phono and S-video out on it and I never used it so I can't really say what the quality was like.
I don't think the cards were ever designed to output a top-notch video feed, they were primarily designed to reduce the processing power you needed to watch a DVD on a PC. They seem to be largely redundent today with the increase in CPU speeds.
is hardware acceleration enabled or disabled (in winDVD)?
You can get a separate DVD decoder card (have got one lying around from back when i had a K6 300) - most popular one back then was the RealMagic Hollywood Plus http://www.realmagic.com/support/dow...us_win2000.htm
it comes with a small cable to pass your vga output through the decoder card (monitor connects to decoder card) - it also supports AC3 DD thru S/P DIF
your graphics card is capable of a smooth good looking picture tho...
Back from the dead
Are we talking about TV or monitor?
I dont like sig pics so i turn off sigsWhich doesnt help when i dont know what ive written here! DOH!
hardware acceleration is now on and has made a bit of difference, thanks
yes it is on a monitor.
The answer is in that comment - ATI has way better DVD Quality than Nvidia's TI 4xxx cards - I think the FX series are supposed to be a vast improvement, however, ATI have always been the best for software decoding.Originally Posted by mrdata2003
are you using the same movie as before - or is the quality of the actual disc different?
