    Surround sound help

I've got a brand new computer up and running, with an Abit IP35 Pro offering me 7.1 surround sound. For the past several years, I've just plugged my hi-fi into my computer, which provides me with very decent stereo, but I'd really like to try out some games with the full surround sound setup.

I'm pretty convinced that my hi-fi is going to provide better stereo sound than any computer speaker kit I can reasonably afford, so ideally I'd like to keep that connected for the purposes of just listening to music from my computer. So can I buy satellite speakers for the other channels, or would that not work? Also, I suppose I don't really need a subwoofer either, as my hi-fi is more than capable on the bass front. Is it possible to do it like this? Or am I just better off shelling out some cash for a proper 7.1 speaker set?

What hifi anp are you using?? Are you proposing using the hifi for the front channels and using the computer to drive the rest of the surround speakers??

Basically yes... i.e would it be possible to use a couple of pairs of powered speakers to make up the rear and side surrounds, thus making 6 speaker surround?

I see you can by 7.1 surround speaker sets from creative for £50 though, so maybe that's the way forward... Or just not bother at all
