So I just bought some computer parts and 4gig of ram

    Asus P5KC, P35, Socket-775, DDR2/DDR3,
    ATX, GbLAN, Firewire, PCI-Ex16

    Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3.0GHz 1333Mhz
    Socket LGA775, 4MB, BOXED m/vifte

    MSI GeForce 8800GTS 320MB OC GDDR3, HDCP
    ,PCI-Express, 2xDVI-I, Tv-Out, 320bit

    Samsung SpinPoint T166 400GB SATA2
    16MB 7200RPM

    Corsair TWIN2X 6400 DDR2, 2048MB CL5
    Kit w/two matched CM2X1024A-6400 Dimm's

But I heard that windows XP 32bit only supports 2 or 3 gig's of ram, is that true ? If true, is there any way to bypass this ? Don't wanna feel like i've wasted some money on 1-2gb ram

Its a limit of 32bit addressing. Windows XP 32bit supports up to 4GB, but addressing space for all your other components has to come out of this.

Ok, one more thing though. If xp 32bit supports 4 gigs, and my gfx card is 320mb, I get about 3.7gigs of ram, right ?

Thanks for the fast answer btw

kinda, but its a lot more complicated than that. Plus, your graphics card is not the only thing that eats into address space. Every device needs it (network cards, sound cards....ect)

Typically you'll see 3.25GB of RAM in 32 bit Windows as it usually reserves about 768MB of RAM for other stuff (suddenly it becomes clearer why nVidia fitted 768MB of RAM to an 8800GTX )

Windows doesn't reserve anything, its all done at the BIOS level
The 3.25 statement purely depends on your setup. Its system dependent.

You could always try XP x64 for 6 months. You can do it free from MS website. See for yourself if you notice the difference.

Tho a new OS may be a bit of a faff, installing, drivers etc.

well you generaly want to reinstall your OS if you change mother board anyway, so might as well go for 64bit vista

Dont have money to buy vista now since I bought that setup, all I have is win XP 32bit.. Well, if I lose some ram by doing this, I don't have to upgrade my ram later on when upgrading OS.. Thanks for all the answers ;D

But you can get a FREE trial of XP 64bit, well you could ages ago. It lasts for ages, about 6 months. You just register, they send an email with the key and a link to a ISO you can download.

Would test out your 64bit glory!!

Are you saying that for Vista as a whole, or as a difference between 32-bit and 64-bit versions?

Re: So I just bought some computer parts and 4gig of ram

XP x64 is a pain. I've had no issues with Vista x64 (on my wifes machine), but XP x64 just gave me problems.

So don't do (XP x64) it. if you can get a copy of Vista x64 try it - you have 30 days or so to "try" it without a key or activation, so worth a go if you can live with a re-install in 30 days or so.

Personally, I haven't seen a big difference between the two, apart from some application compatibility issues (runs Sims 2 fine, but not all the features of Groove 2007).

Re: So I just bought some computer parts and 4gig of ram

Vista x64 was fine for me. Only the Creative Audigy 4 drivers (or lack of decent ones) forced me away from it. With XP x64 the whole x64 Windows thing was very immature, even a year after release. People just weren't buying it because of the lack of support, and driver developers weren't writing for it because no one bought it. It was going around in circles. With Vista x64 Microsoft have forced companies write x64 drivers by refusing to sign driver packages with only x86 drivers.
