    Can a Mobo+CPU+GPU 'fry' a PSU?

    Hi Guys,

    I got a Tagan Ix-eye 420W PSU. I use to run it with 2HDs, a 3ghz pentium, and a 7800GT

Yesterday I upgraded to a Q6000, the hds and GPU are the same. It ran fine, the temps were OK and I even ran a few benchmarks.

This AM I wake up and my house fuse have triggered. All my hardware is OK but my computer won't start. My mobo doesn't even have the 'connected' leds on, so I guess the PSU is a goner.

Onto my question: why did this happen? I don't understand how upgrading to a quad core could have physically damaged the PSU. I don't even understand how it could have placed load on it, after all, a 7800GT is 60W, and the TDP of the Q6600 is 95W (hopefully that's not per core).

Is this normal? I paid through the nose for my Tagan PSU, I guess this really took me by surprise.

Considering the CPU draws much less current than your old Pentium 4... it shouldn't have happened. You might have a dodgy motherboard or something shorting things.

Ok, so I got an old p4 generic PSU 400W I pulled from another box, and lo and behold when plugged in the mobo indicates it receives power. It's therefore the 420W Ix-Eye PSU that died, but thank God nothing else did.

Which lead me to my next question: does anyone have experience with a similar problem? I don't want to sink money in a new PSU just to see it crash and burn.

    Thanks in advance!

Umm if I remember correctly the p4 was 90w and the quad core is 130w
The core 2 duo are lower wattage than the p4 but for the quad core intel did the same thing that they did with the p4 D and shoehorned two chips onto the same die.
So the quad core is far more power hungery and hot.

PS Adidas, if that Tagan is still underwaranty RMA it.
It sounds like ether there was a fault or some type of power spike over night that triped your fuse and killed the PSU.

    Re: Can a Mobo+CPU+GPU 'fry' a PSU?

    Thank you for your advice.
    What I did:
    - Bought a new PSU overnight delivery (Enermax Infiniti 650)
    - Am temporarily using a cheap generic 400W in the meantime
    - Going to RMA the Tagan
    - Bought 3 high-quality surge protectors

The funny thing is, the surge caused by the circuit breaker seems to have been the cause of the dead PSU, not the Q6600 upgrade. So it means that if it hadn't been for the Tagan taking one of the team, I'd be mourning the death of 400 quid worth of brand new hardware today :-D

I doubt that the circuit breaker took out the PSU. more likely that the PSU was on the way out and the circuit breaker kicked in and did it's job saving your other components.
