you don't need raid,
however you do need to use google or look at alesniors sig links for a raid basic introduction.
It is Inevitable.....
That would be alsenior

Google works too: http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourc...q=what+is+raid
Or Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID

haven't read it yet myself (I don't bother with RAID) but I'm sure that it's a decent primer.
Raid is a way of joining two or more hard drives together to give better data security and/or speed.
It's main purpose is for businesses etc so that if one hard drive fails, it doesn't lose all the data or put the server/database/etc out of action for long enough to lose business.
Home users only use it for bragging rights.
Don't worry about it, as you don't need it.

If you are going to link to that, you may as well link to the main page that explains all the RAID levels.

My broadband speed - 750 Meganibbles/minute
Home users do not just use it for bragging rights. RAID 0 was brilliant when I had it, games were smoother and loaded faster.
Now RAID 5 is a real dream, fast speeds like RAID 0 but with parity. I store all my documents/families documents on a separate parition so I only have to reformat my windows disk. If we lost our documents it would be very frustrating.
I was being slightly facetious. Normal home users don't need raid. The additional cost (minimum double the cost) either makes games load in 8s instead of 12s, or gives an additional level of security for the unlikely situation that a hard drive fails. With home users, the hard drives are not being thrashed 24/7, and the main threat is user error (deleting your data by mistake, viruses etc).
