    Windows Start up times

    Hey all,

Just one more thing before I try my first proper overclock - the time it takes for windows to boot on my machine seems a bit cak. I've recently built a new machine and although it runs slightly quicker than the old machine, the start up time doesn't seem any better, here are the main specs of my old and new machines:

    Old
    AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (OC'ed to 2.4Ghz)
    Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro 2
    3Gb PC3200 unbranded RAM
    80Gb SATA 7200rpm HDD
    ATI Radeon 9600 256Mb Grahpics

    New
    Intel Q6600
    Asus P5K Delux wifi AP
    2Gb Corsair SMX2 PC6400
    80Gb SATA II 7200rpm HDD
GeForce 8500 GT Sonic 256Mb Graphics

I'm using the same version of XP Pro, with a very similar software suite. I've switched off a few things in the BIOS like wifi and firewire as I don't need them. I've only got 7 items in the startup tab of msconfig and there are 78 services running. I've removed all but about 20 fonts and optimised my boot files with bootvis.

My total boot time (including my av app loading) is 1 minute 49 seconds which seems excessive. Is this slow?

    Re: Windows Start up times

do you use the gigabyte lan port?
also do you use a static ip address?
if not you should consider using a static ip adress because one of the reasons for slow booting up could be windows trying to get an ip adress from your router.

    Re: Windows Start up times

    done a defrag recently?
do you need those 7 things in the startup tab?
do you have a RAID controller enabled that doesnt need to be?
where is most of the time spent in terms of loading (blue bar 'xp loading' or actually 'in' windows)?

    Re: Windows Start up times

1 min 49 seems way too long. What sort of times do you get with a vanilla install with just base drivers installed? Drivers aside, a clean install should be WAY faster.

    Re: Windows Start up times

I had my router setup with a reserved address for it, but I also set this in the TCP/IP properties page...startup time is now 1:39

    msconfig shows the following items:

    avp - kaspersky
    NvCpl - Nvidia Control panel
ctfmon - something to do with office 2003
NMBgMonitor - something to do with Nero
wcescomm - used to sync my WM5 device
    AdobeUpdateManager
    Adobe Gamma

I've done a normal defrag and forced a boot file defrag

Not sure if there is a raid controller, I don't use raid as I only have one local drive but I did install a raid driver with the mobo drivers

Can't remeber how quick it was on a fresh install, but yeah, it was probably quicker

    Re: Windows Start up times

you dont need the Adobe things loading up at startup but that wont shave off the time...

you would know if you had a raid controller enabled because you'd have a screen after the bios saying 'xxxxxxxx controller detecting drives....' which would time out after ~5-10 seconds... (piccy here

How important is the boot time? is it worth backing up your important stuff to dvd/cd/another computer then formatting and re-installing... you seem to have done all the regular steps for improving boottimes...

    Re: Windows Start up times

I might just reinstall, then I can keep track of boot times straight after install and see which apps make it go up

    Re: Windows Start up times

what version of kaspersky are you using?
and have you got start up areas scan to run at login?
i reccomend ticking the box for scan new and changed files only for the start up areas scan.
if you want to know how just ask me.
you can go to the link below and download the lastest version if you havent already.

    Re: Windows Start up times

most of the time it is about how much is installed on the hard drive, it helps if you defrag as already mentioned. or get a hard drive just for windows and then a secondary for all your'e apps and programs
