Overclocking with 667mhz Ram? Plus mobo recommendations.

As it's getting lost in a long thread elsewhere I thought i would ask here..i'm building for my Bro.

    I've decided on a C2D E6600 and one of these mobos..either p5k-se, p5bi965, abit ip35, or most probably the gigabyte ga-p35 dsr3.

As I only have kingston 667 rated ram would this limit my overclocking? I hear that some mobo's dont allow you to change memory dividers also.

My Bro wants me to goto 3ghz with his setup so any input would be appreciated.

    Cheers, Roo

Nope, 667Mhz RAM will be ok with an E6600.

667mhz memory is pc2 5300. this memory will be able to achieve pc2 8000 if desired (as long as they are good overclockers!) like crucial ballistix.

some motherboards do lock some ratios yes, but not many.

    so 3ghz you want? 333x9= 3ghz!

so the memory would have to handle 666mhz which is easily achieved with pc2 5300

if you want to go higher i would recommend pc2 6400, or get some crucial ballistix

    No worries buddie

i like gigabyte boards, i personally wouldn't buy a i965 chipset now that the p35 is already out and in bloom why not wait for x38?

all the asus boards i have owned operate flawlessly ! never had much luck with flashing abit boards, maybe its just me lol

One question related to this..i'm buying the E6600 for my Bro..

Now looking at various sites I see the E6750 is about 15-20 quid cheaper yet it's a faster chip. What's the reason for this..i am sure there's a good reason!

Re: Overclocking with 667mhz Ram? Plus mobo recommendations.

    The E6750 is a 333/1333FSB CPU and the E6600 is a 266/1066FSB CPU.

That basically means that if you want to overclock and use the 667Mhz RAM, get the E6600.
