Anandtech Phenom Preview

h t t p :/ / w w w . anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3092 (Below 5 posts )

Interesting; In short : Anandtech has put together a Phenom preview, where it compares a single Barcelona to a pair of dual-core Opterons at the same clock speed. From the results, it seems the new Barcelona core is somewhere between 10-15 percent faster, clock to clock, than the current Athlon 64 X2s.

Looks good for intel!

... AMD need to ramp clock speeds, however they can compete on price performance. Intel also have 45nm parts due out VERY soon....

Unsurprisingly dissapointing results there
If Barcelona was going to be a Core killer, they would have been shouting it from the rooftops for months now.

Looks like Intels reign it set to continue....and with the likes on Penryn in the wings, it looks like they are going to be on top for a while again.

Potentially bad for consumers is the immediate thought I get but then I stop and think about how everyone and their dog are overclocking Intels £40 CPU to 3GHz and that you can buy a Quad core for £150......

Re: Anandtech Phenom Preview

True, but that's probably because AMD had intel on the ropes for 3 years (performance wise).

I'm rooting for AMD, because they need to keep the monster that is Intel on it's toes (not to mention nVidia).

I rekon after they've finished Barcelona they may well extract a lot more performance out of it (i.e. shanghai or whatever its called)
I get the impression Barcelona has been rushed.

Personally, I dont really care who has the fastest CPU, as long as the prices stay sensible, and they overclock well and are stable, it can be AMD or Intel for me.

I'm the same, don't give a damn who it is, I just go for whatever is the best price/performance/potential at the time, it just so happens to be Intel at the moment. If AMD brought out a CPU that challenged the Intel's at least it would keep the prices down

No, they don't work like that. When Clawhammer was released all those years ago the samples floating around were all 800MHz and people were laughing, then on release day they dropped 1.8GHz parts and the world's jaws collectively dropped open with suprise.

What wonder Phenom will have?

They have launched it though - these are shipping clock speeds.
