    8600GTS in a Shuttle G5?

    Hi folks,

I think I've decided on a new shuttle build, using a G5 case, and I'm stuck as to what graphics card I will use. Looking at Shuttles own compatibility lists, it looks like the case I want can take a 8600GTS (is this the most powerful card here?).

    http://hq1.shuttle.com/services_supp...?PCI=19&PI=873

I will be using Vista, so a 8600 card is needed over a 7900. I'm tending towards a 8600GTS, as I've heard the GT cards do not have fan throttling (can anyone confirm this is true?). The primary use of the PC will be a media case, but gaming is also desired, so a fan that winds down to produce less sound is a big plus.

The Shuttle site lists the "Asus 8600GTS 256MB" as compatible. The problem is, there are 2 such cards that this could relate to:

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=576205 - this will clearly fit in a G5 case BUT...

http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=339069 - this has a large fan, so likely to be quieter, but the question is will it fit as a single slot solution?

    Any advice much appreciated!

I think they are suggesting the single slot card...however from the pictures of the case there are 2 pci slots so I can't see why a double width card wouldn't fit.. I don't have any experience with shuttle but i'd want to see a picture of the internals and then see if you can get a double width card...that way you could get a decent passive card.

    something like

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=615611
    or
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=661335

EDIT: I imagine the constraint would be the power supply more that anything

    Cheers,

The thing with Shuttle G cases, the outer PCI-E is for graphics. There is no double slot solution possible. The other PCI slot is reserved for my Xfi Elite card.

Of course, some people don't let the case get in the way - lol

ahh I see.. none of the single slot solutions are particualrly quiet unfortunatly..

If you did give up on the sound card then this would work i'd imagine...or mod the case like that (which is funky )

Otherwise you'll just have to throttle the fan on the GTS
