    Overclock, heat and power?

    Recently I've been looking for info about the exact effects of overclocking a c2d on temptures and power consumption.

    But the maths is to much for my brain atm.
    Something with easy on the eye bar charts would be nice, I'm not after exact numbers here but a good idea of what it's like, esp vs unclocked and other types of cpu

    The 2.0ghz c2d is cooler and uses less power than a p4 3.0ghz, but what about when it's overclocked by 50% to 3ghz??

    Just do it exactly like they say. Typical power usage of a core 2 duo is 65 watts. If you are just doing a simple frequency overclock with no voltage adjustment, the power usage scales linearly with the frequency. So:

    2 GHz C2D = 65 Watts
    Same C2D at 3 GHz = 65 * (3GHz/2GHz) = 97.7 Watts.

    If you have to increase the voltage as well (as is prob necessary to get to 3 GHz from 2 GHZ), then things get more complicated, as power usage scales with the square of the voltage:

    So 2GHz C2D @ 1.4V = 65 W (say... I have no idea what the stock voltage is...)
    so 2GHz C2D @ 1.5V = 65 W * (1.5^2/1.4^2) = 65 W * (2.25/1.96) = 74 Watts.

    And thus a 3GHz C2D @ 1.5 Volts = 65 Watts * (3/2) * (2.25/1.96) = 111 Watts.

    Geddit?

    I think a 3 GHz P4 is about 85 Watts maybe... so definitely a lot more performance per watt in a C2D, as you've got two cores running at 111 Watts (say), rather than a single core running at ~85 Watts

    Ahh that makes sense, also means that while a c2d is better at stock and per watt, with overclocks the power and heat really goes up above stock p4's
