    Drive cage advice

I have three SATA hard drives in a RAID array. Currently they're all next to each other in 3.5" drive bays but I'm a bit worried about the heat and a bit less worried about the noise. I have heard about drive cages but don't know much about them - Scan have a few hot-swappable ones but I don't think I really need that.

Ideally what I'm after is something that takes up a few 5.25" bay slots and holds my hard drives, preferrably with a bit more room between them than at present and ideally with some sort of vibration damping.

I would just put them in 5.25" bays with elastic bands, but this is a Coolermaster Centurion 5 case with tool-free enclosures, so there are no holes through which to loop the elastic bands.

    Any advice gratefully received!

    Regards

    Re: Drive cage advice

Someone on silentpcreview.com built a wooden cage for HDs. Also used some round elastic in the cage to dampen vibrations. Check there.

There are a few others on how suspend HDs - check the Silent Storage forum, sticky with pictures on how to suspend hard disks.

Never use elastic bands (they dry out) and break, the HD may suffer damage when it falls.

    Re: Drive cage advice

Thanks for the reply amjedm but I'm after something I can buy off the shelf rather than something I can make. I'm not a very good craftsman!

    Re: Drive cage advice

You're welcome, I'm not good at crafts either

If you have a look at the sticky in the Silent Storage forum you may still get some ideas on what to try.

I don't like to spend too much money on silencing computers (after forking out over £40 for a couple of SilenX 14dba fans) so always try the cheap option first.

How about getting hold of a 5.25 drive cage from an old computer case, then use this to suspend the hard disks in it. You could place it in the bottom of your computer case near the front - subject to you having space/being able to remove the existing cage?

    Re: Drive cage advice

Wow, some of those are very cool indeed. I'd like to get some of the NoVibes holders that they mention but they're over £20 each which is a lot when you want to accomodate three drives. I'm inspired to try my own solution though so thanks for the heads up!
