    Building a Custom PC (Multifunctional)

Hey guys, I am going to create a system that is going to be used for watching DIGITAL/FREEVIEW TV, DVD's, listening to music, playing the latest 3D games, completing work, using applications such as Adobe CS3. It will be running Windows Vista Home Premium Edition. I am hoping to keep this system as quiet as possible.

I am going to Uni, so I need to save space by getting a multifunctional TV.

Currently I am looking for a TV, which I can use to watch integrated freeview, using a remote control, I want to be able to play N64, PS2 and (when I buy one) PS3 games and also want to be able to use it as a monitor (without having to worry that the picture quality being blocky). Something around 24" would be perfect. Anything less than 24" wouldn't be so hot, so if you can find something between 24" and 26" would be fine. I want to be able to watch TV without having to turn the PC on some of the time, which means that it should work independently. I have looked and can't find anything suitable myself.

Here is my current list of hardware:

    Couple of quick observations,

With spending that much, I would be tempted to get 4Gb RAM.

Pretty much any monitor will come with a HDMI-HDMI cable, so you probably won't need another

Re: Building a Custom PC (Multifunctional)

You won't actually need the GTX to play games on an LCD TV.. the resolution is very low. An 8800GTS 320mb would be more than effiecent. Save yourself £140

Why is the quad core so expensive :s it should be £170ish and you should go for the G0 stepping

Naturally "OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800Mhz/PC2-6400 Memory CL4 Unbuffered ATI Certfified Dual Channel Kit
Manufacturer: OCZ Technology 118298 £63.35 £126.7" Notice how the price is doubled, because the quantity is x2?

Yes, I wasn't too sure on the HDMI cable, but still I am left with one of the biggest issues..

Re: Building a Custom PC (Multifunctional)

Exactly, I don't want a low resolution TV, I want a TV which offers me a high resolution, so that I can use it as a decent PC monitor and play PC games on it as well.

StaffsMike, do you have any idea what the difference is between the two processors? This is a genuine question, not just me being sarcastic!

Re: Building a Custom PC (Multifunctional)

    Oh I see sorry..

You will have to get a monitor not a TV.. theres a 22" LG that does it otherwise you would need to get a big monitor with tv inputs like the dell 2407WFP or 2707WFP (if you'll feeling particualrly rich)..then plug in an external freeview box..its the only way i can think of..thats how I do it.

Re: Building a Custom PC (Multifunctional)

made another mistake you have picked the Q6700 not the Q6600.. the difference is 2.4ghz against 2.67ghz.. the Q6700 isn't worth the extra as you could overclock the Q6600 to around 3.4ghz if you really wanted to.

i would also recommend an after market HSF.. something like the scythe ninja works very well with the quads super quiet too

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=296802

also i dont see a case or a psu on there

corsair 520w HX whisper would be good and antec P182 is very nice.

Re: Building a Custom PC (Multifunctional)

Like I said, the TV needs to work independently with integrated Freeview and a remote control, allowing me to play on games consoles such as the N64, PS2 and (when I eventually buy one) a PS3, as well as being used as a monitor when working with documents and playing the latest games.

An external freeview box adds to the clutter and would look unsightly.

And what could the Q6700 be overclocked to?

Re: Building a Custom PC (Multifunctional)

This is what I would get.

    CPU: Q6600
RAM: 2 - 4GB Crucial Ballistix or the OCZ stuff you picked is fine.
    GFX: 8800GTX
    Case: Antec P182
    Psu: Corsair 520HX whisper
    Optical: your choice
Hard Drive: Spinpoint or Western Digital AAKS (i'd have that personally)

    Plus all your extras

    Then either
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=653472

    or

    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2080696,00.asp
    if you have the money

then an external freeview box..doesn't have to big or fancy.. then plug it in via svideo

The Q6700 can be clocked just as high if not higher but seriously..you'll never need it that high..it's not worth £100 more

Re: Building a Custom PC (Multifunctional)

I may reconsider the hardware I listed for some of the pieces proposed by yourself.

However, I still need a TV/Monitor solution, which fits my description, I don't want the clutter of an external freeview box.

The first monitor was very nice (other than the fact that it was a dell), but it didn't offer me a solution to my current problem.

The second was an NTSC monitor and I live in the UK, so that's no good.

Re: Building a Custom PC (Multifunctional)

The 2707 was just the first link i found..its available in the uk for circa £600 - £700

This is pretty much the only thing you can buy to meet your purposes
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=625338

but it only has analog tv built in

Re: Building a Custom PC (Multifunctional)

Okay, fair enough, but I am sure you could get a better resolution for a better price, with more features inclusive.

With Freeview becoming mandatory within months, that Monitor will be useless.

Surely something like this: http://www.play.com/Electronics/Elec...archtype=genre would be more ideal, only I'd prefer it if it were 24".

Re: Building a Custom PC (Multifunctional)

I'm fairly sure you can't but someone may know differently..i'm sure lots of people want what you do..as I did but I just bought a freeview dvd recorder and plug in via svideo.. my box sits away nicely, you could sit the monitor on top of it if you want but that is pretty much the only way you can achieve what you want to.

Well that's daft, if so many people are looking for this feature set, a company should be looking at designing it.
