    Overclocking my Q6600

Could someone tell me if this is OK?

    My setup -
    Asus P5K-E
    Q6600 G0
    2GB Corsair RAM 800Mhz
Antec 900, 2 front fans on low, back fan low, 200mm fan medium
Arctic Freezer 7 on full speed.

    So i've overclocked to 3.05Ghz.

I've left the RAM timings on auto, DRAM frequency on 2.0 but the RAM sticks say 2.1. CPU frequency at 1.275 but Probe2 gives Vcore 1.25.

I cant remember exactly when i started Prime95 25.4 but it says i started at 11:50AM now its almost 6PM no errors so far.

I've left the NB, SB and most of the other settings in the bios on AUTO, Is this OK?

My Temps right now, while still running prime95 are

    57C
    57C
    51C
    54C

    Are these OK?

    ? What?

All i wanna know is does what i've explained sound OK?

Also Probe2 doesnt display and NB/SB or other voltage info, i've changed Probe2 to the latest version but i still cant check. All that i can see is Vcore, +3.3, +5, +12, CPU, Motherboard, and CPU Fan speed.

Have you seen the new Q6600?

Intel’s Core 2 Quad Q6600, which costs £176.24 from Scan, will find that it overclocks to 3.6GHz just using a £15 heatsink

Bit of a sweeping generalisation there, we took a look at a G0 stepping Q6700 and found a stable 3.6GHz wasn't comfortably achievable in a real world environment - every chip is different.

As for the settings you're using, they sound fine. If you want to push further then you'll probably want a better cooler however.

I think its pretty irresponsible of them to say that. Even with the G0 stepping, there are good ones and bad ones. If you get one that does 3.6Ghz on air with a £15 cooler, then you have a good one, but its not a guaranteed overclock.

OK Thanks, but what i was after was to find out if the voltages and the changes ive made are fine.

CPU Voltage is same as Vcore right? SO in Bios i changed the CPU Voltage to 1.28V, on Asus Probe it shows 1.23V. Ive been running another test, Blend Test for almost 5 hours, no problems so far. The DRAM Frequency i've set to 2.0V but the RAM says 2.1, what are the effects of having it on lower than stock voltage?

    Re: Overclocking my Q6600

that an amazing vcore for 3ghz matey. as long as its orthos stable, give it 8hours and you should be all dandy.

    nice chip.

have you thought about getting more from you're memory? lower the multiplier and up the frequency? (you may need to up its voltage for it to be stable) also have you found the highest fsb you can get from the mobo?

remember when overclocking it makes life much easier if you dont overclock the whole system, first find out what the max of each component is. once you have done that you can choose to select the best overclock/temps/voltages thats right for you etc

also about voltages, you only need to raise them slightly "if" you have an unstable overclock. the lower the better, lower temps and less power used.

Many boards have vdroop/drop under load and your VID is 2.750v so imo yes....3ghz is acheiveable @ stock vcore with G0.

Edit:Mine has the same .04 drop under load.

No i havent, im new to overclocking, not looking for absolute maximum optimisation. Maybe at a later stage.

remember when overclocking it makes life much easier if you dont overclock the whole system, first find out what the max of each component is. once you have done that you can choose to select the best overclock/temps/voltages thats right for you etc

I've run Prime95 25.4 Small fft's for 6 hours ( after which Probe2 was reporting 193C motherboard temp and Speedfan as -65C so canceled Prime, 6 hours though.)

And i've also run Prime95 25.4 Blend Test for 6Hours and everything has been fine, except i got a BSOD while running it.

I upped my DRAM Voltage to 2.1 from 2.0 and manually added 4-4-4-12 timings. Then ran memtest for 7 hours, 24 passes no errors.

So, running Prime twice for 6 hours with no errors, thats got to mean my system is stable right?

It means it's 'prime stable'. It does not however guarentee that you'll never experience an overclocking related crash.

No single application is going to test every path on the processor, or every single instruction in the x86 ISA. For example Prime95 is purely 32-bit, so it won't be testing 64-bit logic. Likewise I doubt it uses SSE3, let alone the SSSE3 extensions found in Core microarchitecture chips.

Prime95 is a good general stability test, but you'll need to be aware that just because it doesn't fail doesn't mean that nothing will.
