    Can't re-format HDD!

WD400 40 Gb - has Linux on it (or OS/2, not sure), can't re-format it to Win 32. Fdisk hangs when I try to re-partion it!

What's the best program to use on it? Would Partition Magic be useful? Does anyone have any links for free software that might help me? (don't say fosi! )

How are you running fdisk? What option are you using to remove the current partition? Are you using a Win98 boot disk?

Win32? As in 2000, XP or 2003? Can't the CD / boot disk re-partition the drive? If not try re-partitioning it in windows itslef (as a second disk on a machine that is working OK obviously!). Or as a last result try fdisk /mbr

Or get the manufacturers disk zeroing tool. That'll get rid of any interfering crap on it for sure!

Using a win98 boot disk, yep! Tried putting it in another machine as a slave, but it showed in windows as an 8 meg drive!! tried fdisk on that rig, when I tried to change to that drive fdisk hung again.

Gonna try kez's advice, see what tools are on the western digital site.....

You may be able to use Maxtor's power max utility, which I found in a similar case of trying to save a 'deathstar', this utility worked where everything else on the market failed.

It will deffo work with your WD even if you have an old Maxtor drive to plug in along side it.
