Refurbished NAS - whats the risk?

Thought about getting something like this:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Netgear-SC101-...QQcmdZViewItem

that way i can find my own preferred brand of drives to put it. Although, i'll probably find a SATA version for the sake of future-proofing

but i dont know much about this hardware, what could go wrong with a NAS enclosure?

Re: Refurbished NAS - whats the risk?

Refurbished typically means that the customer returned the item for reasons other than being defective (e.g. a customer may have changed his or her mind, did not like the product, or had difficulty operating it). Whether it is returned a month later or the very next day, such an item must be identified as reconditioned or refurbished to be resold.

Every product targeted for reconditioning must pass a thorough examination. After undergoing repairs and/or sanitation when necessary, the product is repackaged either by the original manufacturer or a reputable professional restoration firm. After the reconditioning process the product has a like-new or almost new condition.

A refurbished product may have serial-number blacken-out or removal of the UPC code, or removal of the front page of the manual by the manufacturer. As for packaging, refurbished products are usually packaged and shipped in non-retail boxes. Some non-basic components (e.g cables, manuals, accessories) may be missing. Please see item description for package contents.
It is as new but has only 30 days warranty - no manual orCD. Failure modesare most likely to be psu onr an obscure fault on the circuit board - but the unit is supposed to be tested by the mfr before being released.

Re: Refurbished NAS - whats the risk?

The SC101 isn't a real NAS box. More like a DAS to be honest.

To use it you need to install software on the windows clients. So it won't work with a Mac or Linux.

But if you had a couple of IDE drives already, then it might be an OK bargain.

I'd avoid the SC101 like the plague. I got one as a freebie and eBayed it after a week.

The performance was hideous, the software you have to install was buggy when the drives go to sleep (which you can't control) you'll find thigns like browing 'my computer' and so on will take ages.

Re: Refurbished NAS - whats the risk?

I too wouldn't advise the sc101. i got one for a client and frankly it doesn't do what it's advertised to do. as the software runs on your own machine the mirroring feature is a waste of time cos if something goes wrong during a write from your machine it will corrupt the backup as well.
however if you accept and understand what it does then you'll be fine.
    want to buy mine?

on another note, i've got a linksys nslu2 which is much better and it can run an itunes server and much more

got an sc101, its a bit slow but it works for me.
have thought about replacing it, but i cant find anything else for the price (£60 and takes 2 ide drives)

btw, they have updated the sortware and firmware again so it works with vista now

indeed. so it's not quite so convenient. however the added extras that you get from make it much more useful.

i think i'd have a problem with having so many power adapters, 1x router, 1x slug, 1x drive, then theres the computers

wish they made a wi-fi router with a slot for a drive, i think a lot of people would want that
