    Best HSF for Opteron 146

Im currently using a Thermaltake K8 (silent boost) on my Opteron 146, but temps are hovering around 51-52.5oC under load and I know it could be much lower. I think maybe I need to reapply the MX-1 but will a stock AMD hsf (with heatpipes) be any better?

I'd prefer one that is low profile and also doesn't cost more than £15 really. By the looks of thngs there probably are none that fit the bill (other than the AC freezer 64pro)

Re: Best HSF for Opteron 146

I used to o/c my Opty 146 to 2.8 on stock volts (1.4) using a Scythe Ninja. Temps would occassionally get to the low 40's.

I now overclock to 2.4 but undervolted to 1.2 and rarely get to the mid 30's using the same Ninja.

The bottom line is, if you are prepared to lose a little o/c and undervolt you can keep the temps low with pretty much any cooler.

FWIW I found that 2.8 - 2.4 made little difference to me - the biggest delays in my PC are due to the hard drive, but I don't bother with folding / video encoding and so on.

    Thanks.
I've currently got it overclocked to 2.72ghz on 1.35v. The temps are the same all across from 2.5v.

Re: Best HSF for Opteron 146

My Opty is at 1.456v (I think my Opty was a 1.4v stock one) and 3Ghz on a Big Typhoon. Currently does 36C at stock and @48C at max load even after 20 months on the same paste (and the accumulated dust'n'sh*t) - fan constantly runs at max just under 1300rpm. Soon to go to MX-2 and a thorough clean.

If I really think about it a good case clean and re-application of paste and HS will do the job for you afterall a 50C load is not an issue with these chips unless fan noise is.

Agree with iranu, I believe Tcase max for singlecore Opteron is around 65-70 so that load temp isn't too bad I guess. Maybe it's better put that money towards case cooling instead by adding extra case fan or replacing your GC cooler with one of those blowout type ones?

I guess it's bit too high. When was the last time you reinstalled your HSF? If you haven't done that for a long time, maybe you should consider doing that now.

Re: Best HSF for Opteron 146

Ok thanks guys. I think I might leave it as it is but I might reapply the thermal paste (MX-1) this weekend.

I think the Thermaltake K8 hsf is a bit weak compared with my AC freezer64 pro cooling my3700+ @ 45-46oc under load.

As for case cooling I did modify one. The intake and exhaust fans are only 80mm but the case has a side port with a tubing. It actually does a decent job in hindsight.
What I done was take that off and I bought a 80mm to 120mm adapter and I put on a 120mm Hiper fan. I tried it both ways with air in and air out. Air out was a no-no as I think it starves the cpu hsf of air whilst intake it does cool it a little albeit 1-2oC I think. Although I've not tested it before and after overclocking.

Re: Best HSF for Opteron 146

I'd ditch that cooler and get a Zalman one with a 120mm fan on. I ran one of those on my OPteron 146 and it ran at around 50c at load at 3.1Ghz.
