Your thoughts?

Hey guys a while back i was saying that i was going to upgrade my entire computer when i got my student loan. However i have changed my mind recently. I was thinking of just upgrading the cpu and getting a 8800gts?

I have the 4400 toledo core x2 now and it is running at 4800 speeds. Would i see much of a speed boost if i upgraded to the 6000x2? Or would it just be a waste of money. I have about 600 quid to spend if I'm honest. But if someone would show me how to get a great system with an 8800gts that would be noticeably better than the one i have then i would consider spending more.

The 6000+ is an AM2 chip and as far as I can see you're using 939 so you couldn't just swap chip for chip. You can get gts for around £190, e6750 for £120, 2Gb of good memory for £100 and a good mb for ~£100. That's under £600, plus you get to sell your old bits, and you'll see a pretty good difference.

Tbh you could probably get a q6600 within your budget.

Plus once you clock it the core2 chip really leaves the 6000+ in the shade.

Waste of money. The 4400 X2 you have is fine for a 8800GTS. Just upgrade the card, overclock if you really want, and put the rest of the money into an ISA/savings.

I agree with Kalniel. The 4400 is fine for a GTS. Are you sure it wont oc any higher than 2.6Ghz? I would expect a bit more myself.

You can get a 320mb GTS for about £175 now. Dont bother with the 640mb version.

I agree with kalniel and s_kinton, you'll be fine with just the GTS. And any ex-student'll tell you, you'll be better off spending you student loan on food, booze and women (in whichever order of priority you like).
