    p4 northwood 3.ht
    sapphire ati 9800xt 256
    abit ic7 max3 canterwood 478
corsair expert cmxps 3200 xl (the one with the dasboard )

for the new build ive got

    2 new dvd drives (pioneer+liteon)
    250g sata hd (segate) 7200.10

    asrock4 core duel vista atx

right heres where i need some advice

ive decided on the case p182

the pc is in my bedroom and the novel idia of the view case has given me too many sleepless nights
(psu leds mobo lights and ram lights and front usb have fallen into case-common fault on this case)
    and
520W Corsair HX Series Modular PSU, ATX, EPS12V, whisper quiet, 5 year warranty

    1. cant decide on the cpu

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, Socket 775, 2.4 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, Conroe Core, 4MB Cache, Retail

    or

    Intel Core 2 Quad-Core Q6600 G0 SLACR, 95W, S775, 2.40 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 8MB Cache, Retail
has to be between these two (asrock bios on my board my be less than 1.5 and may not be able to
to work out the box )

    2. to save money im going to use my old corrsair ddr1 ram+ old 9800 xt untill i can get more money to
upgrade to a nividia 8800 cards when i can saveup some cash

    any advise?

all good choices for a silent build

I would get the quad core if you can afford it. The difference may be less apparent at the time being but as more and more software is written to take advantage of them the difference will become very plain.
It will also overclock quite nicely.. low 3GHZs area with a decent HSF for which I would recommend the Scythe Ninja Rev B
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=296802
It fits perfectly in the antec p182 so that the two rear fans drag hot air away from it and the low speed fan it comes with is inaudiable. The only part of the PC that will make noise is the 8800 and possibly the hard drive for which if you fancy an upgrade the western digital AAKS version hard drives are literally silent and can't be heard inside the p182

thanks will think about getting the quad in the long run

ive heard the asrock is not the best board to overclock with
and that the Intel Core 2 Quad-Core Q6600
run hot and dont overclock to well?

thanks for the reccomendation ninja but i think it will interfere with my ram on the asrock board due to the size any other coolers you can reccomend

also think i might stay with the duel core as the quad is not a real quad

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you can use DDR1 RAM with those CPU/motherboards.

You might have to invest in new RAM too.

Re: help time to upgrade plz

Just googled it... Wow, didn't know such a motherboad existed!

That's really good for the 'progressive' upgrader. It's got a little bit of everything.

    I didn't know that you could use DDR1 RAM with a Core 2 Duo/Quad. All I've ever seen is DDR2 or DDR3 boards. I stand corrected .

Re: help time to upgrade plz

The G0 stepping quads overclock a lot better especially with a decent HSF like the the ninja.

The motherboard and ram will perhaps not like to overclock though I don't know. When you do uprage the mobo and ram it will overclock well though

Re: help time to upgrade plz

    http://www.asrock.com/mb/cpu.asp?Model=4CoreDual-VSTA&s

the only problem is that the board comes revision bios 1.4 or 1.5

    to get the

    775* Core 2 Quad Q6600(G0) 2.4GHz 1066MHz 8MB Kentsfield P1.80 (needs bios p180)

    775* Core 2 Quad Q6600(B3) 2.40GHz 1066MHz 8MB Kentsfield All (all bios)
    775 Core 2 Duo E6600 2.40GHz 1066MHz 4MB Conroe All (all bios)

the only way to flash the bios is to have cpu that works on all revisions
so unless you have a compatable cpu you wont get the board to power up

so it looks like the non slacker q6600 or the duel core 6600
and so im going to go for the duel 6600

sorry what i ment to say that the hsf ninja will cocer the ram no1 slot on the board due to the size

on the board if you want to use ddr1 ram you need slots 2 and 4
and if you want to use ddr2 ram you use slots 1 and 3

Re: help time to upgrade plz

I'm using that with my E6750. Seems ok but I've overclocked it and to keep it at around 40 degrees celcius, the fan is running almost at full powere, (usually around 90&#37 which is a bit noisy in my case...
Maybe I should just let the CPU get a little hotter!

    My System: Coolermaster Centurion 5 (black) case, Intel E6750 Core2Duo, Tagan Easy-Con 530W, Asus P5B Deluxe WIFI, OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 CL 4-4-4-15 PLATINUM XTC, Samsung SpinPoint 200Gb SATA2 / 2 x Maxtor DiamondMax 10 200Gb SATA, 256Mb Sapphire ATI PCI-E X1950PRO, Creative X-Fi Xtreme 7.1, 19" Daewoo W9ZQ Black Widescreen TFT, 4Mb Virgin Cable Broadband (formerly Blueyonder) with Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G and DD-WRT firmware.
