im in the process of building a computer...n need help with my graphics card

so i started searching for Radeons...looking at the HD3870 GPUs

and now im totally stuck, as i firstly dont no wether the 8800GTX has HD compatibility, and secondly, have no idea as to which 1s better

Im in a similar dilemma, from what i understand though the HD3870 is better value for money and more future proofed because it uses GDDR4, correct me if im wrong someone.

The best IMHO would be the 8800GTS (G92) around £200, then there would be the 8800GT 512 and the HD3870 the later being better value for money. The HD3850 is also a very good card at around £100 so it all depends on your budget

I do know the ATI cards take the HD Decoding off the cpu 100%, but the Nvidia cards are better performing

    Re: graphics card

There are a few factors, and if you are mentioning "HD compatibility" i assume that you are meaning outputting from the PC graphics card to a HD TV?
Although this can be done with a DVI cable (check that your TV has a DVI input), the card needs to have HDCP codes (or something like that) in it. Check each manufacturer's website, but this is an example
The best best for TV output is to buy a card with HDMI output, but a quick Scan search surprises me that there are no cheap 3800 series cards with it!

In general though, assuming that the output connector meets your needs, then both the modern 8000 nvidias and the 3000 series radeons take some load off the CPU to allow for High Def disc decoding.

You might want to also consider power consumption and noise issues, which the Radeons appear to cope with better than the Geforce's.

The only other issue to factor in then is the 3d abilities, and whilst loads of people here will be screaming "buy an nvidia geforce 8800GT" or something, the truth is that anything from the Radeon 3850's 256MB up to the Geforce 8800GTS 512MB
offer great to good value for money. You pay a bit more and get a bit more, so you can't go wrong. Just avoid the 8600 series, and the 2600 series.
I'm commenting on an internet forum. Your facts hold no sway over me.

    Re: graphics card

The 38** on the whole are shipped with a DVI to HDMI adapter the big advantage these cards have over the nVidea offerings is that they also output audio over the HDMI link.

Budget will depict which card you get as well as what the main focus of the card will be at the ~£100 area of the market you will be looking at the HD 3850 512MB moving up to ~£140 the HD 3870 512MB comes into play the next step is ~£175 for the 8800GT 512MB then ~£200 for the 8800 GTS 512MB, they follow price order in terms of gaming performance but if HD decoding etc is the main focus with gaming as an after thought I think you would be foolish paying more than for the HD 3850 512MB this will provide ample gaming performance and will be excellent for media use.

    Re: graphics card

HD3870 is not more future proof due to DDR4. It will perform in the future more or less exactly the same as it performs today. Good card. I want one.

The new 8800GTS having 512mb RAM (not the old versions with 320mb or 640mb) is cheaper with similar possibly better performance than the 8800GTX. Another good card. I want one.

    Low budget then HD3850 512mb or 8800GT 512mb.

I think generally the 8800s with 512mb are all newer and therefore preferable in price/performance.

You can not class the 8800 GT 512MB as a cheap card especially as you can get a 3870 for £30-50 less in most cases.

    Re: graphics card

Hasnt the ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 just been released? on Overclockers UK there around £300, but arent they on par with or better than 8800 ultras? from what ive heard there able to play crysis on very high without any lag / smoothly. Im not very well imformed at the momeny (did a few quick searches on google ) and i myself would like if any one could answer these questions. If this is all true your basicly geeting a ultra thats cheaper by like £200 and better

    Re: graphics card

The 3870 X2 is effectively 2 3870s in crossfire on a single card so performance can vary greatly. However you will not be able to beat it performance wise for the price Scan have them for £270 effectively the price of 2 3870s but it will work a board without crossfire support.

Hexus will be comparing to an Ultra in the near future according to their article so wait for that to get definitive answers but it is going to be better bang for buck than the ultra no matter what!
