Considering the ASUS P5K-E - need some info
Hi,
I’m considering getting the ASUS P5K-E (wifi ap) for my new Q6600 computer.
Will I have any problems putting a Geforce 8800 GTS in it? Will it block some other slots or ports etc.? And which ones?
Also, is it a good, stable board, or problem-ridden? (I’ve read so much about the deteriorating quality of ASUS boards lately, people having problems with them, etc.)
Please share your experiences. (Or if you’ve heard or read something.) :)
Thanks for reading.

Judging purely by the picture, a long card may block the two SATA ports, but might also be only with a longer GTX/Ultra.

I have a 8800GTX working with my P5K WiFi Deluxe, which is almost the same board. Providing you connect the SATA connectors first, you'll be more than fine, particularly as I don't think the 8800GTS is quite as long.
Cheers,
Stephen

You'll be fine.
I have a GTX in the P5K and it is doable with one angled and one straight cable, should be easier on the GTS.

I have the p5k-e with an 8800gts, everything is fine!

Thanks guys, sounds good so far. :) So it doesn't block any of the PCI or PCIe x1 slots?
And you haven't experienced any issues/ bugs with your boards?
Re: Considering the ASUS P5K-E - need some info
Mine has been the least buggy and least quirky board that I've used in a long time, so much so, that I'm still on the 0304 bios, and it is still rock solid.
Mine is the P5K deluxe wifi AP and not the E model though.

Nope no issues, and my bios is not the latest 0401 or something but not the new 0503(?).
The PCI-E has a bigger space than usual for cards like the 8800's. Even then im not sure that the slot directly under the PCI-E slot is usuable, but there are a few more on the motherboard. Who uses PCI slots anyway? Enough USB's, RAID ability, decent sound card, WIFI and wired LAN all on board.
Re: Considering the ASUS P5K-E - need some info
Thanks for the replies. The PCI slots are my main concern because I'm going to need some PCI cards for music recording. So I'd be very interested to hear if anyone has tried using the PCI slot near the video card slot on this MOBO (or one of its "siblings")?
By the way, does the video card (I'm only getting the one, no crossfire) have to go in the blue slot, or can you also use the black one? The specs say that both are PCI-E x16 slots, but the blue is "@ x16 mode" and the black is "@ x4 or x1 mode". I'm not really sure what that means, to be honest?
Also, has anyone tried using the P5K-E with a GF 8800 card, in an Antec P180/P182 case? I've read that that case blocks the bottom PCI slot, so if the video card blocks another one, that would leave me with one free PCI slot. :/
Thanks for reading. :)

Just stay away from the ACS³ 8800 GTS EVGA's they are a hazardous fat ass covering all kinds of things you don't want covering - like 2xPCI slots and 2xSATA sockets on a P5K Deluxe.
Re: Considering the ASUS P5K-E - need some info
Both of the PCI slots are acessable on mine, and that is with a GTX and a PCI-E RAID card, plus a PCI sound card.
Edit: I should point out that I am using a watewrblock on the GTX that only takes up 1x slot.

I was just about to buy this card and mboard. (Specifically the ASUS 90-MBB670-G0EAY00Z from EBuyer (QuickLink 129125). Is the card really that big? I've read reviews suggesting it is the quiestest of the 8800 GTS's. Looking at the mboard layout (from a review) it looks like the ESATA and one PCI slot will be covered, but will another PCI slot bite the dust? and what about the SATA connections themselves?
Any info appreciated.
Rich.

Anybody wanna answer my (presumably very stupid) question? :)

Just a quick response to this...

In an Asus P5K Deluxe (or variant layout) the EVGA 8800 GTS ACS really is that much of a fat ass. It stands proudly, and directly, over SATA 1&2 sockets, admittedly you have approximately 1cm height gap to try and wrestle high and low profile right angled SATA cables in, but the clincher for me wasn't the 1st PCI slot being covered (I'd anticipated that) but it actually sits on the 2nd PCI slot rendering it unusable in any practical sense - leaving only one usable.
Buy the card, but buy an X38 motherboard with an appropriate layout to accomodate it. Or find another P35 board with layout that suits it. (I'm waiting for X38 myself, in case you can't tell).
Edit: looking at the ASUS 90-MBB670-G0EAY00Z, SATA socket placement is different than on a P5K Deluxe/Premium (you have less) so would probably be fine, but the PCI slot placement looks the same from here.
Assuming I've got the right board...

If you want your shiny new GTS to run optimally then you would use the PCI-E x16 slot ear-marked for your card on the motherboard. Tea-time :D
