Interference on front port audio - suggestions?

Spec as under My System. I'm just getting used to my new machine, built in an Antec 900. Unfortunately the front panel audio is virtually unusable from a quality point of view.

On board audio is more than adequate for me & that from the rear panel is fine, however front panel audio suffers interference which is obvious with headphones when audio is quiet. There's hiss & other noises corresponding to machine usage (drive activity, cpu load & dragging of windows).

My guess is the Antec 900's front panel audio lead is picking up the interference inside the case.

Is re routing it likely to make much difference? I'm loath to experiment as all my cables are tidily routed. Is there anything I can do to add shielding to the lead? Any other suggestions? Cheers.

Rerouting will help if it's an interference issue, yes, and there is little else that you can do aside from adding shielding to the cable.

I guess when it comes to shielding you could try to make poor man's coax by using kitchen foil But be careful, it would then be conductive and a potential means to short out components

Re: Interference on front port audio - suggestions?

A really ignorant question - is aluminium kitchen foil adequately conductive? Also, to act as an effective shield wouldn't I need to ground one or both ends of it? If this fixed the problem I'd probably wrap the lot in insulating tape or heatshrink for safety.

Actually, thinking about it, if I could establish it was definately the lead, maybe I could just replace it with a better shielded alternative, though I'd have to refit the plug at one end & solder it to the front panel at t'other. Does that sound a better idea or too much hassle? Any suggestions for cable, say from Maplins?

Thanks for replying. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't on to a non-starter.

Bit dissappointed with the Antec 900 - first no internal speaker & now interference issues with the front panel audio

Wrap the cable in kitchen foil then electricians tape to avoid any chance of conduction.

A cable re-run might help as well. If you make sure wires only cross at 90 degrees (difficult in a case I know) then that should limit crosstalk.

Re: Interference on front port audio - suggestions?

I have the same issue with my Gigabyte Aurora. I'm due to do a rebuilt and clean very soon so I think I'll do what's suggested. Does anyone know of any aftermarket cables?

You could also try putting a couple of 'ferrite rings' on your audio cable. These things are used a lot on radio amateur stuff to cut down 'interferance. You should be able to pick them up at 'Maplins' or falling that do a 'google'

Good idea, if you have any old modem cables with them on around then that'd be a good salvage.

Ferrite rings don't do any major magic against interference. Best I can tell, by wrapping a few turns of the wires around them, you create a simple inductor, which helps to reduce high frequency alternating currents. This would reduce the hiss portion of white noise, but I doubt it would help with much else.

Re: Interference on front port audio - suggestions?

I tried various cable routes while running P95 & defragging all drives, for maximum noise. Originally the cable ran across the top of the mobo & down the backplane. Changing this to take it between the ram slots & then between the gpu & northbridge cut most of the noise out.

Reconfiguring audio so it treats the headphones as speakers forced it to drop the overall amplification level, further killing the background noise.

I've not bothered yet experimenting with shielding. Might do if I get bored. The results aren't perfect but an order of magnitude better & acceptable to me. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'll be interested to read what Iranu tries.
