I had a E4300 before which I ran stably at 2.9ghz. Sure you can get better overclocks on full size systems but medium level overclocks can be achieved quite stably on Shuttles as long as you keep to 2gb. I have always had an overclock Core2 in my Shuttle. Only use 4gb if you do NOT want to overclock.

Anyway this is only my personal experience of having used Shuttles for the last few years.

I had an XP2800(non-mobile) in previous Shuttle which ran at XP3200 speeds daily.

    Re: Lightweight ATX case

Well the bad news is that I would like to OC (not extreme but who doesn't want extra power for "free"), and I do want 4Gb RAM. And I don't really want integrated graphics. The Shuttle SP35P2 Pro looks a possibility, but it's only just been released and I can't fins a review.

    Re: Lightweight ATX case

The only other option is to buy a Silverstone Sugo and buy your own motherboard and PSU. I believe the Sugo only takes mATX motherboards though.

Here is some stuff about the Sugo:

As far as I can tell the G33 is the mATX equivalent of the P35 and has onboard video. Shuttle seem to have the only non onboard motherboard around. Anyone know any different?

I think the Asus P5K-VM has onboard graphics, it's good enough for normal desktop use and the odd bit of gaming, nothing fancy mind.. but all the boards come with a PCIe 16x slot anyway, so it gives you a choice.

Looks like the same case can be had from ebuyer but their picture doesn't show the nasty A+ graphic.

Still, that case claims to be 25.8 Litres in volume, compared to the SG33G5 shuttle linked earlier at 11.5L, thats over twice the volume. Antec NSK3480 is 25.2L,

So uATX boxes may be small compared to the 56.3 Litres on a P180, but they are not a Shuttle.

    Re: Lightweight ATX case

I am very happy with my Sugo SG01 from scan - it made it back from Amsterdam ok! Scan also sell a carry bag for it (though I used the cardboard box it came in). Approx:
    • 21L (outside dimensions)
    • takes standard ATX PSU internally
    • room for a couple of graphics cards and 2 ordinary PCI slots
    • room for 2 internal disks & 2 DVDs etc
    • 3kg weight

    I found it
    • never hot or noisy despite running a high spec config with plenty of memory / disks etc
    • slightly fiddly assembly - compared with the really easy
    • well thought out airflow

so more "standard" and more room than a shuttle - but "yer pays yer money & makes yer choice"

    Re: Lightweight ATX case

Thanks, that's really useful info. Using standard kit is much more useful. Also useful to know that the ASUS P5K-VM can take an external graphics card. It means I get an option to put one in later which is always nice to know.

What are the fans like in the Sugo, as regards noise is concerned?

    Re: Lightweight ATX case

I think my case (Lian-Li PC-05) is pretty compact and light for an ATX case. Has the PSU in the front and 2x 120mm fans for cooling. I think it's quite difficult (maybe almost impossible) to buy in the UK now, but might not be too difficult in the US.

    Re: Lightweight ATX case

I don't think you can buy it anywhere. And I suspect it's like the Lanboy that was suggested earlier. Not really big enough for a modern ATX machine, but a lot larger than the Sugo, for instance. Don't think these are runners.

    So I have three options:
    1. Get a decent case, then take it to bits before I go home and pick up shipping costs (doesn't seem a runner);
    2. Get a cheapish case and bring the bits back while binning the case; or
    3. Go Sugo (or similar) with a mATX mobo.

If I was sure that the last ran stable, cool and silent on an OC Quadcore it would be no contest, despite the loss of connectivity on a mATX.

    Re: Lightweight ATX case

Old anandtech review of the SG01/B for what it's worth: http://www.anandtech.com/casecooling...spx?i=2579&p=1

last paragraph/sum up doesn't look too clever: http://www.anandtech.com/casecooling...px?i=2579&p=11

Regrettably, we can only recommend the SG01 to people who are eager to build a Micro-ATX system, absolutely love the styling and are either willing to put enough effort into the system to quiet the fans or simply ignore the noise (perhaps by using the small size to put the computer in a very out-of-sight place). Thankfully, these people will get to enjoy the good layout and decent expansion options, but otherwise, there are several other options out there for less money, and they run cooler and make less noise.

Not what you wanna read with an overclocked quad in mind.

Think I'll go option 2 then. Got a nice cupboard to store all the packing. Might have to start a new thread searching for the quietest OCing cases.

Dunno if it's been posted already, I've got eyes shut. Have a looksee at the SilverStone Sugo SG03 SFF wadical weedesign: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...item=689&num=1 The SG02 never made it out of the silverstone labs according to that.
