Core-4 or Core-2

Hello everyone,

I have been wandering around the web trying to find information about C-4 and C-2 processors. Some say that C-4 is better, yet others contradict this and reckon that in some instances, e.g., Flight Sims that the C-2 is far better.

May I ask all you experts in this type of technology to enlighten me please, also which case should I buy. I already have my present system in a Lian Li lovely case, but I do not know if a C-4 or a C-2 would fit into it?

Which mobo would be the best to buy, and graphics-card bearing in mind that costs would not really matter, to a large extent. My wife does not know this?

Quite frankly wandering around trying to decide which system is a lot like, 'Wading around in glue!'

Basically will the applications that you will use actually be able to use 4 cores?
Most can't yet use 2 which leaves multitasking as the only reason to get 1 if they don't.

AMD is bringing out a range of 3 core CPUs ...

Get the QUAD core!

Outstanding for games old and new, really! Great for even general PC use especially multitasking. Overclocks v.well. Definitely future proof.

The case is dependent on the motherboard! The new motherboards, ATX, fit in to ATX cases. Motherboards support both C2Q and C2D.

If you have the money, always get the better ones..

If you don't like wasting too much money, just get 2 cores since nothing (software, hardware) has catched up with CPU power...

what is your case model? matx, atx? model number?

quad core will definately become more prevalent as apps become written with them in mind, at the mo particuarly overclocked the 6600 will rival even the 6750 when overclocked and you get 4 cores to play with :-)

If your doing any kind of video work with a well known brand of software and have a fairly recent version then you should go down the quad core route. These type of apps along with CGI applications are way ahead of most other apps when it comes to supporting multiple cpus/cores. The quad core will last longer seeing as multi-threaded applications is the way things are heading these days.

3D modellers and such have been supporting SMP for a decade or so, thus why they easily take advantage of multi-core systems.

There are quite a few reviews that compare the 2 for various types of software. The 2 factors I can see to consider is the benefit of 4 cores for apps that can use it vs the higher processor speed of the duo cores which tends to be a benefit for gaming.

So its 4 cores for apps vs 2 cores for gaming, while keeping in mind that the current processors are so overpowered they can do just about anything you want anyways. And its not even as clear as one being better than the other in specific situations, Ive seen benchmarks showing a 6600 beating a E6750 at gaming and vice versa.

Bottom line is you cannot go wrong either way

Personally I went with a E6850 because I only use my PC for gaming and I wanted the best core speed I could get.

As far as motherboards go, consider what chipset you want to go with, nvidia, intel, do you want to overclock, do you want SLI, what type of ram do you plan to use.
