    cpu temparture high

    Hi
Could anybody give me some advise i have recenlty upgraded my processor from a intel celeron to a intel pentium 4 640 retail boxed with intel heatsink fan. I have a Packard Bell imedia 1307, ever since doing this i am experiencing high tempartures, i am using PC Wizard 2007 to monitor my system and when idling with 0-4% cpu usage it hovers around 54-57c, i assume this is quiet high as most peoples are around 40-47c. When i first installed it i got a thermal temparture error and my pc kept shutting down. I was advised that maybe i did not put the heatsink on properly and maybe the pins werent in right so i pushed really hard on the pins and one of the pins clicked into place. This got rid of the thermal temparture error message and my pc boots up fine now. Only problem is now the high tempartures whilst idling. After 2 weeks at runnning at these tempartures i was advised to apply some thermal compound so i used arcticsilver5 but still my tempartures are still high, and i can assure you i cleaned the processor and heatsink fan and the pins are pushed in propely on the heatsink fan. Its a 2 year old pc that cost £350 so i certainly not going to through money at it i.e water cooling and all that business. Any help would be very much appreciated. I keep getting people saying its my case ventilation but may i point out i have done exactly the same has an other person with exactly the same Packard Bell pc and cpu upgrade and his idles at 45-49c.

    Thanks, steveveg

Is the CPU mounted correctly? All pins in fully? How much Compound did you put on the CPU / Heatsink as you only need a small amount. Is the Heatsink fan working properly?

    Re: cpu temparture high

    Chips will always differ.

My Two E6600 Core 2 Duo's run around 20 degrees idle @ stock settings. My mates runs 30 with a much better HSF. Luck of the draw i'm affraid.

Pentium 4's run quiet hot..not a big shock..they also come with rubbish HSF's.

This is a good HSF for very little money. It comes pre applied with good thermal paste so you don't need to worry about getting the right amount etc.. it would certainly drop your temperatures.

i think the heatsink is not on properly?

the cpu doesn't need that hard to install on the mb though?

    Re: cpu temparture high

I shouldnt worry if I were you - my old pentium 4 3ghz gets to about 86c just running the bios and its still working. Years of dust in the heatsink is taking its toll i think, but I dont even have an OS installed on that machine at the moment so I havent got round to sorting it out.

    Re: cpu temparture high

Yup I built 3 systems with a P4 3.2 Prescott back two years ago and all 3 ran mid 50's - mid 60's on average, even with decent cooling and aftermarket heatsink/fans.
The Presler/Precott chips are voltage/temperature mongers dont expect high 30's - low 40's idle from them with average air cooling.
