Re: How do I set up a proper network?

Can you post the output of ipconfig /all on both machines?

As for whatismyip.com, that only shows you the IP you currently have from your ISP, and this is on every machine the same.
It is the IP under which your Router is accessable from the outside.

Are you talking about the 2 different configs for the WLAN?
You can have as many configs as you want, but you would need one which has the same settings as your router, otherwise you can't get a wireless connection.

Re: How do I set up a proper network?

    hello,

I#ll look at the ip config now.

What I meant was, how can I use a cabled network (PC) and wireless network (laptop) at the same time. Wouldn't they be on different networks?

Re: How do I set up a proper network?

I always have to do something with simple file sharing. Either turn it on or off. Because it's funny like that. Can't remember which though, using vista atm.

When your computer is connected up, go to another computer, go to run, and type in
\\computername\ (of the other one) and it should bring up a dialogue box to log in and stuff.

    On one System?

Well, it is possible, even when used on one system. Then the wired and the wireless would need 2 different IP addresses.

The same when used on 2 systems.

Re: How do I set up a proper network?

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear.

Basically, as I have a wirlessly connected system, the laptop, and an RJ45 connected system, the PC, which sort of network should I set up? The wirless, or the normal wizard?

EDIT: I'll edit my post above to get the pic to show up full size.

Post the ipconfig output from your laptop as well.
    Use the normal wizard.

Re: How do I set up a proper network?

OK guys I think he needs to stop here and step back.
First of all his network IS working, as stated he can connect to the internet on all of his machines
His router is giving out DHCP and DNS info by the looks of it.

AD-15 can you do an IPCONFIG on all of your machines including your Vista PC.
Is it giving the same Subnet as the info you have already shown here.
I.E 192.168.2.# (# - representing a different number from that which you have posted)
Once you have established that you have this same subnet go to a different PC on your network and go to a DOS prompt (CMD) and type ping (enter the ip number of the machine you have just tested)

    I.E ping 192.168.2.3
    Tell us what happens.

Re: How do I set up a proper network?

I'm confused, why all this mucking around?

First off, simply check that each computer is in the same workgroup, this is done via Control Panel -> System -> Computer Name and there's a button there to change it if they don't match (most are defaulted to MSHOME.

From there, click on the My Network Places that should be either on your desktop or start menu depending on how you like Windows XP to look and you should be able to Navigate via Entire Network -> Microsoft Windows Network -> MSHOME -> Individual computers.

Each should have a couple of different folders visible, usually Shared Documents and Printers and Faxes. You can add more via My Computer, then navigating to the folder in question and then right clicking on each folder and selecting the Properties -> Sharing & Security settings.

If you get problems with accessing each folder, even after you've shared it, then it's usually firewall related issues and the previous answers should help you further.

Re: How do I set up a proper network?

    Hi Lucio

I think he has tried all the wizards earlier and had no joy.
I thought it would be best if he started at the very basic fundamentals.
even if the workgroups don't match he should be able to ping the other machines.

if he can't ping the other machines the Wizards will never work anyhow.

I wanted to share the directories of "Program files" but it's not allowed, seems daft to me, as if you stored everything in a slight letter change then that's ok..........................there must be a way around it for the more experienced computer user, something in the registry to be altered?

I'm guessing you're using XP Home. This is one of the in-built protection mechanisms in 'Simple File Sharing'. There are ways around it, though really the best method is just to copy the stuff you want to share to another location.

Guys, can you ping all the machines on your networks?
Untill we work this out you really can't go any further, as you don't know at this point that the PC's can 'See' each other in the first place.

Well I only found out because my sister, in her small office of two computers, asked me how could she see the emails that the other computer has downloaded (and vice versa)...............well I thought network the two computers and if she opened the email program e.g thunderbird stored in "program files" on the other computer, then she could read what was downloaded.....................erm well that's the theory if I moved thunderbird to a different directory (like you said).
