I don't use Thunderbird, but a google says that its email database should be stored in
    C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\
which is shareable in XP Home.

No properly-written Windows program should store user data anywhere under the Program Files folder, this is the underlying model for Windows security.

Well the inbox is there, but there would be two inboxes (one on each computer) and I'm guessing one would have to mess around with paths/links etc to access two inboxes...........anyway I will play with it, but taking thunderbird out of "program files" maybe the answer.

excalibur2: If your sister is using email supplied by her ISP then I suspect that the easiest solution would be to use the webmail facilities that they should supply. This will provide machine-independence without any hassle.

Well that is probably the answer and there is no need to network the computers, maybe an account with hotmail would do but am guessing that the ISP webmail is not going to be as good as Outlook or thunderbird for contacts list/addresses, attaching jpgs etc for sending/receiving.

Re: How do I set up a proper network?

Outlook is very simple to network.
there is a file called Outlook.pst which Outlook uses to store all its information, this file can be kept anywhere you like and can be linked in to on as many PC as you like.
the only downside is you can only link one Outlook session at a time to this file.
If you want more you will have to use an Exchange server.
Another option is tell Outlook to leave the mail on the ISP's server when you download it this means that you will get your mail duplicated on both machines.
This will not update your address list or contact lists though.

    IMAP anyone?

Then all the email, folders, contacts, etc are stored on the server and individual clients can access it at any time.

Thanks all and sorry AD-15 for nicking your thread for a while........thunderbird has "leave messages on server" box and will try it as my two computers are linked (forgot if I mentioned it).

Edit: just sent myself an email on one computer and received the same on the other.

Cool, if you back up your file regularly you can then import the changes from one to another then your user info will be kept up to date as well.

Re: How do I set up a proper network?

Ok, so both machines are using wireless now.

Open a command shell on your Vista machine and enter
    ping 192.168.2.1
    and then
    ping 192.168.2.3
Then do the same on the laptop.

Re: How do I set up a proper network?

    hello,

Sorry, I seem to have confused everyone.

Basically, I have 1 XP PC, connected RJ45 style. It's IP address is 192.168.2.2.

I have a Vista PC connected wirelessly, IP 192.168.2.4.

I have an XP laptop too, connected wirelessly. IP 192.168.2.3

I've tried pinging everything from every system, no success. The IP configs for each system are in 3 seperate posts above.

Re: How do I set up a proper network?

Your Windows network config seems to be fine, the problem's probably at your router. What make/model is it?

Try restoring it to factory defaults.

Check that you've turned off all firewall software on your machines (including the Windows firewall). Right now this looks like a firewall/zone issue.

I've tried already disabling the firewall. no success.
