Re: How do I set up a proper network?

    hello,

    Thanks for your reply.

I agree with you completely Lucio, but the fact is that it does do what I want it to do, albeit is extremely resource hungry, and in this case, hard to use and configure.

I don't really use it much for anything than protection and scans, so I can live with it for another 8 months, no problem.

I just need to find out how to configure it now to get this network problem sorted...

There are free alternatives that work better and don't have the resource and configuration problems of Norton, McAfee or ZoneAlarm. There have been a number of threads on the subject.

I know, but I still need to find out what I need to do with Norton, how to disable the share blocking.

    Start -> Programs -> Norton -> Uninstall

I had to help out a friend who couldn't get onto the internet because Norton's firewall was blocking everything. A couple of weeks later I was taking trojans off it using AVG & Kapersky, despite the fact it was fully up to date.

AVG free is good if you don't want to justify spending more to yourself.

You don't configure Norton, Norton configures you.

Re: How do I set up a proper network?

To be honest AD-15, most folks around here are likely to be using other solutions so may not be able to help you configure Norton as they will have little to no first hand experience due to it's poor reputation.

As you've shelled out hard cash to the folks at Norton, can you not request assistance / support directly from them (probably part of what you've purchased from them).

Personally, I reckon Norton should start using an advertising slogan along the lines of "we stop all dangerous activity on your PC by rendering it completely useless"

Re: How do I set up a proper network?

I'm sorry to say it's true. We uninstall every instance of Norton (home) software whenever we come across it. The loss of £30 or £40 against the royal pain in the ass it is to use and maintain, it just isn't worth it.

And, if you think about the money you spent on your PC, all that performance being wasted by crappy software...well....your losing more than £30 of your investment in hardware.

Re: How do I set up a proper network?

    hello,

I've tried that before- no success. However, last night I tried over and over again, trial and error and experimenting, and I actually managed to get it working. After a while, I narrowed it down to one single adress I needed to unblock. It was the same on both XP PC's. It's working fine now, I'll try again tonight. I'll try it on the Vista machine too. However, on the laptop, the SSID of my router was blocked- yet the wireless connection was fine??

Re: How do I set up a proper network?

    hello,

I've just tried it, and it works with the Vista machine, exactly the same address.

However, as with the laptop, it is wirelessly connected to the router. The SSID of the router is blocked (well, under the 'limited' column), yet the connection still works fine....... What is happening?

Also, how do I know if the adress I unblocked is safe to 'unblock'?

    Thanks guys!

i'd say it is safe to block anything on the local network ie 192.168...
computers on the internet will not have ip addresses beginning with that

    hello,

The address wasn't an IP, it was a physical gateway address, in the format "-- -- -- -- -- --".
