Hi, whats the fastes hard drive out at the moment? is it still the 150gb raptor? i read on custom pc mag a while ago that stated that the 400gb seagate hdd is faster then the raptor?

is a sata300 backward compatible ie it works on a mobo that has a sata1 interface? Thanks

Raptor drives are the fastest, although SSDs are faster then Raptors but more expensive.

About time the Raptors were given a boost tbh, still fastest but not got the edge they used to have..

It depends, as a single drive they might be fast.
But can be outperformed by a RAID with standard HDDs.

As for SATA300, the MB should be backward compatible, or there is a jumper setting on the HDD

In random reading the Raptor will be faster but in sequential reading RAID is faster.

all depends on the person, I must say from a gaming perspective Raptors are not worth the money, barely help with loading compared to modern 7200rpm drives. (given a fast CPU, GPU and RAM)

From what I notice, file searches, defragging and getting into desktop (all my programs are opening etc...) is far quicker compared to my 7200.10s.

I found that having lots of hard drives helps.

Raptor with my Windows and Apps installed on it.

Another drive with my games on it.

Another drive with my temp folders and swap file on it..



Works for me.

is there a huge speed difference between a desktop external hdd and a portable hdd that doesnt need a power outlet to power it up ie http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=483039

Yes. Much slower. The desktop one is probably cheaper as well, meaning you have spare cash for a new keyboard too
