A 19" Samsung SyncMaster 940BF (got that last year), and a 4 year old 19" Hyundai ImageQuest Q995 (CRT) that's on it's way out. How would a large monitor pull more power from your PC?.. They have independent power supplies built in. The Samsung is a brilliant monitor, no dead/lazy pixels, no ghosting/artifacts, same goes with the monitor the old man got.

The question is; do I really need the extra connections?
With the dvi on the samsung, It can take a xbox 360.
If that is correct then I am losing is the ability of having a xbox and a pc connected at the same time and not being able to connect a sky/ntl box?
I don't mind losing sky/ntl support to much for the £100 save, but is the £100 worth paying for the screen quality?
You could get a DVI switch, or just hook the XBox up to the VGA port, you wouldn't be losing anything really. You'd be hard pressed to find problems with a Samsung panel, the quality of display is superb. Also of note, Samsung manufacture their own panels, they don't buy off third parties, that's why they can undercut dell for a better display (chances are that Dell buy their panels from Samsung anyway, there's only 5 companies in the world that do make them).

By power I mean processing power. GPU and CPU (to display games at the increased resolution). I'm really keen to find out about that Samsung. Gunna do some searching on it. I saw it in Scan, but its a very low price for a 24" which made me wonder about it.

Currently, I'm using an NEC 20WGX2, and its the worst thing I've ever bought It has the best picture quality I've seen on any flat screen monitor, but they have so many problems it ruins it. This is the 4th replacement I've had... and I've tried to live with it, but it has too many problems. So I'm going to get my money back anyway so I need to decide on a new one pronto.

Naw, nothing wrong with it, it's just an old model, Samsung is probably trying to shift what's left of them so they can focus on their current 24" model.

As has been mentioned, the higher price for a Dell is not because the panel is better, its for the resale of the panel and the extras they may add such as connections and their "customer service"

Dell purchases panels from Samsung, LG and Phillips from what I have discovered through research.

Yeah I did wonder about that. I'm not sure if it would ever cause problems or not. Although, I sometimes play games at none-native resolutions on this monitor, and they don't look stretched or anything, so maybe it would be ok.

As for that Samsung 245B, I just found out that its a 6bit panel I'm pretty wary of those since I saw my friends monitor (with a 6bit panel). It was bad news. I'm really starting to think about that Dell 2407 now... Its a bit more than I was hoping to spend but.. you do keep a monitor for a long time I suppose.

Re: 24' moniter choices

Yeah the panels are 6bit or 8bit. The difference isn't enormous, but it is noticeable. Especially when looking at skin tones, and especially when monitors are compared side by side. Some are better than others though, but it can make a difference sometimes.

Cut from somewhere else:
6 bit colour is 2^6 x 2^6 x 2^6 = 262,144 colours
8 bit colour is 2^8 x 2^8 x 2^8 = 16,777,216 colours

Hence, a 6 bit monitor can only display 262,144 true colours (other colours are dithered) whilst an 8 bit monitor can display 16,777,216 true colours (or 16.8 million - Note, manufacturers incorrectly report this as 16.7 million).

However, manufacturers report the colour specs for a 6 bit monitor as 16.2 million to indicate that the monitor can display millions of dithered colours. I don't know why they chose 16.2 million, but the number is irrelevant - it could have been 15.7 million, 16 million, 16.014 million etc - as long as it is not 16.7 million (this is the true count for 8 bit monitors).
I think the unpleasentness I saw on my friend's monitor though, wasn't because of the 6bit vs 8bit. I think it was something else, and I'm not sure exactly what it was. I just know a few games looked damn ugly on his screen compared to mine.

Re: 24' moniter choices

It seems the samsung is the senseable choice. Although it is a compromise it is still a 24" HDCP screen for £320, and at the end of the day that is what really matters. I would rather not this turn into a detailed tech thread, but I still appreciate the input.

According to Samsung, the SM245BW is a 16.7m colour monitor: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/co...565F-03Eng.pdf

I find that highly unlikely, given that Dell buys panels from other companies.

The new HC version of the 2407 does have a 92% of NTSC colour gamut...hence the HC (High Colour)

Re: 24' moniter choices

Its the backlighting not the panel that gives 92% colour gamut. Thought to be honest the colour gamut is probably the least of your considerations when buying a TFT. 6 bit panels are dithered upto 16.7 million colours which is a bit of a con, but unless you do colour critical work not that significant.
Input lag is a consideration if you are a FPS gamer as is the quality of the electronics if you wish to avoid ghosting in films and games.
Its a real minefield choosing a TFT !

Re: 24' moniter choices

What about a 24" Iiyama PLB2403WS or something similar?

1920 x 1200

HDMI input

Can display 1080p as its meant to be seen if I'm not mistaken.
