how good will this rig be for gaming?

Any advice, performance ideas or price saving

Looks very good but here goes:

- Maybe cut the motherboard down to an Asus P5K-E and beef the CPU up to something like an E6750.
- For RAM I'd go with 2GB Ballistix PC6400 as it's on offer at the moment and overclocks like crazy.
- Apparently the Samsung SH-S203 is the best DVDRW drive available at the minute.
- Go for the 64bit version of Vista, you'll be running a 64bit system after all plus it's worth avoiding the whole 4GB memory issue.
- If your display's 22" or less I'd go with a 320MB 8800GTS.
- Tuniq Towers are expensive and heavy, go for something like the Scythe Miné as it's only a few degrees behind and much lighter.

Would 32bit vista be better if he's only using 2GB though? Also, would drivers still be a problem, may need to check any printers etc you have before you go 64bit?

64bit is pretty good for drivers actually. I've not had a single problem yet other than a wireless card but the cheapy asus one from scan works a treat for that

If you can push the budget the Q6600 CPU is a peach.

As nightshadow says the scythe range of HSF's is very good. I'm a fan of the ninja myself.

64bit is much more future proof, so go for that regardless of what RAM you have.

i also recommend 64bit vista...

if you go 32bit, might as well stay with XP since vista is more of a resource hog, you need more memory for it to play with...

but will the 8800gts be enough if he is playing DX10 games

you need at least a gtx or ultra to play on that res. just look at world in conflict. a gtx can barely run it on 1680.

You are in a tricky situation because nvidia could be releasing a new high end card this november for the same price has a gtx or ultra. i would honestly wait till november to see what happens has im sure nvidia are not far from releasing new cards.

Also, intel are releasing new cpu's and motherboards real soon so its worth buying the latest and newst stuff so that your game rig wil last abit longer

19" widescreen displays are only 1440 x 900 so an 8800GTS would be more than fine, at 1680 x 1050 (22" widescreen) MOST games can still be played with all the balls and whistles.

My E4300 could reach 3ghz easily and the E4500 I am using can reach around 3.1ghz(I use the former in a backup pc now).

However later E4300 cpus do not overclock as well but as E4500 can reach this speed it is worth it do the high 11x multiplier. If you intend to get an E6750 I would spend extra and get a E6600 quad core instead.

I personally do not like overclocking RAM as it can be easy to screw up unlike a processor. I prefer stability rather than a small speed increase.

Specs seems fine although if I were you (and depending on avilability) I'd consider getting a 2900pro. They will kick the 8800gts. They seem to overclock to 2900xt standards. They also seem to be a little cheaper (2900pro 512mb for £164 Scan pre-order)

I think they will steal the crown from the 8800

And I'd get a faster processor...
