    Spec me a NAS drive

Right, my company is in the need for some NAS goodness. Basically we want a RAID box we can plug into the network and connect to via both Windows and Linux clients. Most probably RAID5, storage in the 1TB mark. Nice alerts if the disks are FUBARED.

    Any ideas?

If you have an old box laying around something like FreeNAS would do the job.

Haw about a Thecus N5200 Pro?

Very nice boxes. Lots of oomph. Pretty good performers and the Thecus suppost forum is on here too

What sort of cost would a Thecus with 1TB of disk cost?

Re: Spec me a NAS drive

    Thecus N5200Pro - £439
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=437050

    250 Gb Seagate - £36.49
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=345219

    total - £621.45 + VAT

But to double the capacity to 5x 500GB drives, you are only talking an extra £100 or so

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=454632

Thats just an example, you might want different drives in there. But i don't think that is expensive for 1 or 2TB of fault tollerant network storage for a company.

Just remember that RAID is not a substitute for backups!

That sounds perfect. We do offsite backups so yes this is just what we are after. What happens if a disk explodes? How does it let me know?
