    probs with x1950pro

hello, so I just got my new motherboard, cpu and ram and all seems fine. however i tried playing company of heroes and it keeps crashing after about 10 minutes.

a wee bit of troubleshooting and i installed atitool and the temps seem outrageously high when running the 3d window. in fact it got to over 105c and crashed again at some point, effectively turning off the graphics card.

this seems way too high but i'm a bit puzzled why this would be. didn't have any particular problems before. i can get it to run stable by underclocking it by 100mhz but that's hardly the point of upgrading to a faster machine. the only thing i can maybe think of is that i have set the voltage control on the motherboard to automatic so i t might be supplying too much volts to card?

    system specs are
    gigabyte gapr35-ds3r
    core2 2160 @ 3ghz
    2x1gb corsair ddr2 5400
    corsair 520watt psu
    2xhdd
    x1950 pro
    zalman cnps9700 cooler
    antec p182 case

i did try lowering my overclock from 333fsb to 300 but made no difference

    advice much appreciated

I had this card and had a similar issue called the 'overheating vrm' issue, if you do a google search you'll find lots on it. I too, underclocked, but in the end I just got an 8800gts because I lost patience. Manufacturers won't acknowledge the card as faulty because it's a design flaw.

    runing xp pro sp2

i think i've had the card for a year maybe and not had any of these probs before hence i'm not sure it is the vrm issue as why would it have just started when i put it in a new motherboard?

    Re: probs with x1950pro

Is the fan being obstructed by anything/could it have been damaged in the move? Try running with the case open so you can see that it's spinning and ramping up correctly. Temperature reporting is obviously ok if ati-tool can see it, but maybe the drivers need to be installed again or something.

Is your X1950 Pro made by Sapphire by any chance?

    Re: probs with x1950pro

it is indeed a sapphire one...

i thought i had cleaned the card when swapping bits over but i took it out last night and got rid of all the dust and used my zalman thermal paste and temps now maxing out about 75c
    much better...

sometimes it the simple things eh?

    many thanks for the pointers

    Re: probs with x1950pro

Pleased to hear it's working as expected again

I'm considering removing the heatsink from mine now to apply some thermal paste, do you think the big drop in temp speeds was down to the spring clean (assuming it was well clogged up) or the addition of the thermal paste?

    Re: probs with x1950pro

not sure really as i never used ati tool before so have no idea what the temps were like previously when it worked fine. i'd say probably half the heatsink was blocked though. there didn't seem to be very much thermal paste though so it might well be a good idea if you have some good stuff lying around
