    Rate My Rig

Apologies if I've got the wrong thread, but how would you all rate this proposed set up:

Case: Thermaltake Tsunami dream black window (old case, I'm v happy with it)
Misc DVD writer, card reader, etc

    Important stuff:
Mobo: Abit Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLi 775 (Cheap, good speed, old chipset but I don't care)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
GPU: BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC 320MB
    Ram: Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz Dual Channel Kit (BL2KIT12864AA804) x 2 (i.e. 4 sticks of 1gb each).

I've got an Xfi I'll be sticking in it as well. Just wonder what y'all think about the "core".

RAM is my knowledge weakspot. Would be grateful for any advice on good ram deals. I'm not an overclocker, so good vanilla performance would be nice, if poss.

    Cheers.

    Re: Rate My Rig

The crucial ballistix RAM is pretty much the best you can get for overclocking.. vanilla it will be the most reliable and stable.
Get it from crucial direct this weekend for £52 per 2GB

The rest looks ok. You would be better with the P35 chipset especially as the your CPU choice is 1333mhz FSB native and the P35 was designed to run that..the Fatality wasn't.
An Abit IP-35 would be a good board imo.

If you can find the extra money I would get a Q6600 instead of the E6750 though. Even if you have to half the RAM I would get the q6600 as it will last you a lot longer and I doubt you will notice any difference between 2 and 4GB of RAM.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 May as well go q6600
GPU: BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC 320MB fine
Ram: Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz Dual Channel Kit (BL2KIT12864AA804) x 2 (i.e. 4 sticks of 1gb each). - excellent RAM, and is on offer from crucial at the moment for 52.86 for 2x1GiB.

As you arent overclocking, the motherboard should be fine.

    Re: Rate My Rig

Sweet, that's really helpful, thank you. At the moment, I'm running an Athlon 64 4000+ (single core) on an A8N SLI deluxe with 2gb corsair XMS 3200 ram.

I'm hoping, frankly, too see a HUGE speed boost, and was going to max the ram out to help that. I think the 4000+ single core outperformed the socket 939 4200 dual core...

P.S. I might start OCing soon... got to start some time, right?

Edit: I like the look of the Ip35. Thanks for that.

Forget to mention PSU: I was thinking the Corsair 620 watt. At the mo I have a Qtechnology silent 460 watt, which is probably borderline?

    Re: Rate My Rig

Clunk (from above) has a very good guide for beginners. You can't go wrong with it and you will get some big overclocks from the intels without pushing them very hard at all

The P35 based boards will fair you a little better in that deparment but the fatality isn't all that bad at overclocking anyway.

If you are going to overclock, get a different board, go with a P35 board, and that will also let you get the best from that RAM as well.

Dont forget to add a decent cooler as well.

The corsair 520w would do for your system, and both the 520 and 620 are highly regarded PSUs.

    Re: Rate My Rig

I see you've recommended the scythe ninja elsewhere, to another guy asking the same kind of thing as me.

I've got big copper Zalmans on CPU and GPU at the moment. Will look at the Ninja

    Re: Rate My Rig

If the zalmans you have will fit then they should be fine tbh.

I like the ninja mainly because it works almost as well as the thermalright extreme does but with a much lower speed fan so it's basically silent, which I really appriciate in my other pc..which uses all silent air cooling

I just ordered 2x1GB, which is also on the QVL of my MB (Asus Striker Extreme)

If you want you can PM me your email, as there might be a reward for you from Crucial, at least they say so:

I have one ABIT Fatal1ty FP-IN9 and i have to say that´s an amazing board, and overclock´s very well !!

A run a daily FSB 400 ROCK SOLID and i already run my board at FSB 480 for test´s ! But need better cooler to validade ORTHOS !

So what´s the problem with overclock on the Fatal1ty Board ? Most board´s overclock limit is between FSB400 and FSB500 ! (stable)

    Regard´s

I'm not doubting that its an amazing board, its just that the P35 boards are better in my opinion.

Running 400FSB doesnt mean it is stable, and if it wont run it because you have an inferior cooler, then it definitely isnt stable.
