dvd writing problems with 8.5 gb discs

I have 2 dvd/cd writers..dual layer +R/-RRW/RAM TSST corp cd/dvdw SH-S183. They burn to cd and 4.7 gig discs but cannot burn to 8.5gb. I have tried Nero, power2go and the windows software. various messages such as insert disc, when the disc is already in or burning failed after 20 minutes of cd drive light flashing or the bsd and a memory dump/crash. They can both however read 8,5 discs made on a previous pc. H E L P

I had one of those as well, as they were the only SATA drives Scan had in August last year.

They're terrible, buy a different one. I currently have an Optiarc (Sony Nec) which works very well.
I never got the Samsung drive to complete a DL burn, and there were several other problems with it.

Have you checked to see if there's a firmware update for the drive?

Re: dvd writing problems with 8.5 gb discs

The Samsung SH-S183 is a good drive, I use one at work and it burns every disc I throw at it.

The drive certainly burns dual layer discs. Try using ImgBurn to burn your dual layer discs.

Edit: Agree with IAmATeaf, worth updating to the latest firmware.
