New graphics card ATI 2900 pro?

Up until the other day I was thinking of getting a 8800gts or even gtx but came across the 2900pro. Which I believe is a underclocked 2900XT for the price of an 8800gts.

So would this be a good card to go for? Ok I know other new updates are coming in nov/dec but to be honest I can't wait I promised my nephew I'd give him my 7800GT for his birthday (this month) so I can't wait that long. From what I've read the new chips aren't gunna be a massive change in performance.

I have dell 2407 monitor so want to play games at 1680 x 1050 resolution currently 7800gt can't hack it but i'm sure 2900pro would.

Depends what the price is but the general concensus, and i agree, is that the 8800GTS is a far better card. Infact, i believe its better than the XT aswell.

I believe that was the case until very recently, but AMD's latest driver release has apparently brought them right back to equality, with the 2900XT beating the 8800GTX in some tests.

And as the 2900Pro is a very slightly underclocked 2900XT, with all functions intact, selling for less than the price of an 8800GTS 320MB, it does look like it could be a very good buy indeed.

I would suggest trawling round a few reviews, checking the driver revisions used for the benchmarks.
