    8800GTS installation Issues

So i've just finished bulidng my new rig, but i've come across a small problem, by 8800GTS doesn't seem to fit in my P182 case.

It's a width rather than length issue, i plug the card into the PCI-E slot but it doesn't seem to want to fully plug in, the metal fascia at the rear of the card that you attach to the rear of the case seems to prevent me from pushing the card fully into the PCI-E slot. Although it still works its means i can't screw the card into the case and after a while it works itself loose.

I've come up with a temporary solution but ideally i want to secure the card in place properly.

hope that all makes sense, any ideas where i might have gone wrong or is this a problem others have come across?

    Re: 8800GTS installation Issues

I doubt its a problem with the case as im sure plenty have used a 8800 in a p182, are you sure that its not hitting the back of the case or the mobo? i had a similar problem where it wouldn't fit in, turned out it was hitting the back of the case as the faceplate at the back was a little bent, just had to bend it back into place

    Re: 8800GTS installation Issues

Yeah, i've got a feeling the gap between the mobo and the case might be rather narrow and it has to be fit almost perfectly, which probably means i'm going have to take out my radiator...oh well.

    Re: 8800GTS installation Issues

I have an 8800GTX in a P180 and it fits no problem.... but a wee bit tight.

Is your problem the tab at the bottom if the metal interface faceplate? It has to drop into a small slot and it might need a wee bent to get it in right? Experimant with the removed blanking plate to get the right angle? I had this problem with another card - a small bend of the bottom 'tang' fixed it.

    Re: 8800GTS installation Issues

I assume it's the metal faceplate as i can't imagine it's anything else, the gap just seems extremely tight and the gfx card faceplate is thicker than the blanking plate.

I'll just experiment a little until it goes in properly.

also try pushing the other pci plates surrounding it as much up and down as they will go to get a little bit more room

    Re: 8800GTS installation Issues

I think he means the adjacent blanking plates, and when I said mine was a wee bit tight, I meant re the length of the card - very little clearance at the back for the two PCIE Power connectors, not the width of the metal faceplate - which should all be the same....

    Re: 8800GTS installation Issues

Ok i see. I don't think the width of the faceplate is an issue, just the thickness, which is obviously a lot thinker than the blanking plate. I may need to angle it slightly though.

Thanks for all the help. I'll keep you updated with any results.

    Re: 8800GTS installation Issues

Common problem, just bend the bottom of the face plate (the two prong/tab things) back toward the rest of the card by about 1-1.5mm.

Worked for me and my 8800GTS.

    Re: 8800GTS installation Issues

Done, as EtheAv8r said the antec cases have small recesses fro the prongs and it proved quite tricky to get them at the right angle to fit. Fit it does though and now hopefully i won't have any more problems with the gfx card.

    Re: 8800GTS installation Issues

    I've still got problems:

So i've correctly installed the 8800, yet i'm still experiencing problems with it. Although working correctly now, if i shutdown my pc and come to restart it then the monitor doesn't recieve a signal, the PC powers up, i can hear/see the case and hsf's working, the green led indicates the mobo's recieving power yet the monitor recieves no signal.

However If i power down the pc and disconnect/reconnect the power supply and restart then it works. I have no idea why the system is being tempremental. As far as i can see it's one of 3 problems:

    1. PSU not providing power
    2. GPU faulty
    3. Mobo faulty

Now i'm pretty sure it's not the PSU as the GPU fan spins up, thise leaves 2 and 3. The mobo seems to work in all other respects, and even when the 8800 doesn't output a signal all the other components seem to work. I guess the PCI-E slot might be faulty.

So what should i do? Should i return the 8800? I'd test the mobo with another gfx card but i don't have access to one, neither do i have access to another system to test the gfx card.

    Any suggestions?

    Re: 8800GTS installation Issues

Before you get into the whole swopping/RMAing nightmare are you 100% sure this phenomenon is not a BIOS setting issue? When you say "shutdown" do you mean a full S1 power down ie. a true OFF or an S3 power down (normally indicated by a flashing power LED on your case). If it is the latter, have a look at the power settings section in the BIOS and enable "Repost Video On S3 Resume" I think the latest edition of the BIOS is 0503 which I would suggest you update to via EZ Flash 2 and NOT from Windows with Asus Update.
You may be thinking of a sentence involving tuition, a grandmother, some eggs and the sucking thereof, but either way I hope you get sorted without having to swop your hardware.
Apparently, "Do whatever you like" should NOT be considered authorisation to build my uber rig!

    Re: 8800GTS installation Issues

Any help is always appreciated Toobad, when i say shutdown i mean choosing shutdown from windows vista (rather than standby or something similar), which i assume is a full power shutdown, however i will check the bios settings and enable "Repost Video on S3 Resume".

Where would i find the bios revision numberm how do i use EZ flash 2? (I'm going google them now).

I had a very similar problem to this.... On some boots you would see POST stuff on monitor, on others nothing - monitor reported no signal - I could press the button to cycle round all three inputs but no joy. I was using a high quality dual link DVI-D cable. Initially I suspected a GPU fault. Experimenting I found if I connected with a DSUB cable it worked OK but video quality was poor - especially small text - with the DVI-D it is pin sharp. I found if I connected both connectrs from the 8800GTX to the monitor the problem pretty much went away, and after boot-up I switched over to the DVI-D connection. I also thought that this was a silly way to have to operate.

I then found that the monitor was in 'input auto-scan' mode and this made it hit or miss.... usually miss and so I got no display or I might get a display well after Windows had loaded, and when I changed this to lock it to the DVI connector that my DVI-D cable was on.... this fixed the 'fault'. So I now only have the one cable connected and all is well with the world. Might you have a similar issue?

Erm possibly, i assume the "input auto-scan" is selected in the monitors menu, so i can check. I'm currently using a VGA cable with a vga-to-DVI converter that came with the card.
