What to do with extra £30????
hi, this is my spec so far;
Corsair 520w
BFG 320gb 8800gts
antec nine hundred ( Maybe get a better case)
hitach 320gb (bigger/better hard drive)
Q6600:)
crucial ballistix pc2 6400 ( maybe more/better RAM)
Asus p5k-e wifi
Logitech S220 2.1 Speaker System Black 17W RMS
Samsung SH-S203/BEBN 20x DVD±R (maybe a second?)
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64Bit OEM (DVD)
Tuniq tower 120
I have an extra £30 to spend but can't figure out what to spend it on, don't want a different CPU cooler but any other change advice will be appreciated.
Re: What to do with extra £30????
Could you save up another pay cheque? That thing is crying out for an 8800GTX.
But at the least, ideally get the GTS with the more ram, rather than the 320mb version.
Also, if you don't have 4 gig of RAM, then you would probably want to get that, if you are going to be using Vista 64.
Another option could be a nice CPU cooler, incase you where planning on just using the stock one.
Another option could be a different case and then a bunch of custom chosen case fans.
And lastly, perhaps a nice mouse for gamers - if you are a gamer?
I personally though, would have getting an 8800GTX instead of the GTS, as a major priority. It would really do justice to that Q6600. The GTS is good, but the GTX is very good, and is a better match for a Q6600.

Second hard disk is well worth having if you haven't got one already. Its good to back important stuff onto. Or just to store most of your data to keep your main disk clear and fast.

I'd get a 500GB Western digital AAKS.
Best hard drives i've ever had. Hitachi bad! lol
Re: What to do with extra £30????
Hard drives I Swear by western digitals, raptors and the bog standard ones!
Seagate are good, and samsungs from what I remember are usually the most quiet. Id just stay away from maxtor myself!
Re: What to do with extra £30????
AAKS is the quietest drive i've ever had. Silent just about does it justice. I won't have anything else now unless I hear it in operation first lol.

I was gonna suggest a 640MB GTS but you seem to have enough with that 8800 320gb!!
Point of view or BFG 8800GTS 640MB for £219!
Re: What to do with extra £30????

That quote sums up what I think about hard drives really.
I would definitely think about that graphics card though. Like I said, that 8800GTS (320mb version), is still a really nice card. But I think if you got the 640 mb one, or ideally... the 8800GTX instead, you would really be glad you did. That 320mb GTS might be enough if you don't play at a high resolution? But, its just that you have a Q6600, so if you matched that up with a better graphics card, it would really set you up well for the future! I think once games like Crysis, UT2k7, and Alan Wake start getting released... our graphics cards are going to seem really important.
My 8800GTX does a great job in most games, but there are a couple of games where my PC struggles. I get quite low fps in Two Worlds, and FSX brings my PC to its knees. :( If I had a Q6600 instead of this E6600, I think it would probably be quite a bit better. But anyway, my point is that even with an 8800GTX, you aren't garaunteed perfection. So you need to give your PC the best possible chance! And its only going to get more of a struggle to keep up, once this next generation of games reach us.
But yeah, if you just don't want a different card, then get a nice Western Digi hard disk as a secondary disk :) Backup all your important data on to it, and use it to store all your stuff like movies, MP3's, or whatever. And then your main disk can just have Windows and whatever games you are playing on it.

Re: What to do with extra £30????
Unless you're desparate to buy now, I'd wait a couple of weeks to see what happens to 8800GTS prices, in the face of nVidia's upcoming additions to the range - you'll notice that they're already dropping in price (I saw £150 inc. from Scan in another thread, which is cheaper than I've seen them to date).
Re: What to do with extra £30????
Agreed with the 4GB of ram, for 64bit its generally a must I think. 2GB might be pushing it if your using it for gaming etc.
Re: What to do with extra £30????
If you are getting windows 64bit, pair it with 4Gig of RAM.
and the 8800GTS 320Mb has been an amazing card for the last year, but its coming up to refresh time, and nvidia will be releasing the next gen of cards. Things will be getting faster/cheaper and the next couple of months. Tis a tricky time to get a graphics card. Also, World in Conflict has shown that new games are going to be memory hogs, at high settings the 320Mb card ran out of memory, slowing it drastically. I would say 512Mb is minimum for an enthusiast card right now.

Signed. An AAKS with the os on the outside edge will actually beat a raptor, and cost a whole lot less €/Gb

Talking nonsense now. My raptors still beat my 500GB AAKS, but they are *very* loud in contrast to the AAKS. Still, they perform well for 7,200 RPM disks, and would be more than enough for the majority of the people.
