You can get a circuit running at 1.5v to generate loads of heat and another one at 15V that generates little if any.

Beats me this argument over cooling:-

If memory is operated in its design specs for voltage (and not covered in dust in your computer etc) what's the problem............if it overheats at maximum volts then the memory manufacturer should ammend their advertising and drop the volts.
But saying that, it wont hurt giving them extra cooling esp if it only cost say a £1.

Exactly - if your are running the RAM out of its designed parameters, you are over stressing it electrically anyway, without the additional burden of the additional heat that is being generated. In those circumstancesit might be worth bodging some additional cooling, otherwise RAM operated correctly at its designed speed and voltage, it should not need anything extra.

Re: cheap way to cool ram?

I'm failing to see anywhere in the OP exactly what RAM the guy is using. Crucial do DDR2 6400 ram in 1.8 & 2.2V varieties.

    http://www.crucial.com/store/listmod...PC2%2D5300

(not sure if the filter on that link will work though)

Also, crucial are selling RAM rated to run at 2.2V that will die if you do so without additional RAM cooling over and above the heatspreaders already fitted? That being the case, why do they make no mention of it on their website:

    http://www.crucial.com/search/search...ywords=cooling

Perhaps they want to put themselves out of business through countless RMAs? I doubt it...

Edit: And for the record, the OP makes no mention of overclocking, overvolting or over-anything else. There are a few insults being paraded out here based upon folks making assumptions.

I have posted one of the OP's previous posts below, as you can see, they are Ballistix PC2-6400, and they run at 2.2v.

As I have already said, it is D9xxx chips that are affected in this way. Think about it, you have a chip that is rated at 1.8v, and then you put 2.2v through it, and then run something memory intensive, things are going to get hot, and that is when the damage occurs.

I have run non-D9xxx RAM without active cooling for months and it has been fine, but D9xxx are a completely different beast, they do die, and they die quickly if they arent getting any air - simple as that.

Also, if you are using 4x1GB of 2.2v sticks, this also increases the chances of the memory dying if left uncooled, as they are closer together and generating more heat.

Can I also ask, have you got, or have you ever used Crucial Ballistix DDR2 RAM, or any other D9xxx variant, and if not, what are you basing all this on?

I have an extra £30 to spend but can't figure out what to spend it on, don't want a different CPU cooler but any other change advice will be appreciated.

Re: cheap way to cool ram?

In fairness to scrandman, the OP didn't mention it being Ballistix, or it running 2.2V. And it shouldn't be getting no air at all, if the case has some fans in it. All scrandman is saying is that RAM chips should be fine as they are, assuming its not overclocked and the case has sufficient cooling. Which is true, or RAM should come with a warning that it needs extra cooling bought seperately, or it will die.

It wasn't fair for someone to say its the most unintelligent post of the year.

Re: cheap way to cool ram?

    I'm using ballistix 8500

I have a digital thermal sensor attached to the inner surface (side that faces the 2nd module.
    At idle (browsing etc,) temp =29.5C Ambient = 26C Delta = 3.5C
on load, for example running latge ffts on orthos the sensor can get upto 38~39C Delta = 13C
So load on memory effects temos in just the same way as the CPU.

There is no change in voltage which is 2.2v

Now that's the temp of the heatspreader, NOT the chips themselves. I would guess the chips would probably be 5~6C hotter.

    Oh I forgot to mention
    Im using
    Memory cooler
Yes made by corsair a memory manufacturer which , by implicatioon points to the need to cool ddr2
    & also
Sidepanel The left hand fan acts as an intake directly over the ram slots.

Now i would say that's pretty effective cooling.

So the question is what heat would these chips get to without any cooling.

erm so businesses using photoshop (and similar) programs have special computers with fans on the memory supplied by Dell, HP, Compaq, etc?
What's wrong with:- O/Cing the memory to extreme then use a fan. if not don't bother?

Re: cheap way to cool ram?

    1) since when did
    Dell, HP, Compaq, etc?
use performance ram?? Most of those pc's memory aren't rated above 800 if that Ram voltages from these suppliers will be set to auto (1.8v) by default, meaning there won't be a need to cool it, unless the user then starts tweaking.

    2) This is an enthusiasts forum. Enthusiasts tend to buy performance products. As stated performane rddr2 runs at 2.1~2.3v which is best with active cooling.
examples are Corsair Dominator. OCZ 2Gb OCZ DDR2 PC2-9200 FlexXLC Edition which is watercooled.

    3) Most people like to protect their investment & also give some headroom for intense activity be it benchmarking or gaming. (Not many people would class Dell, HP, Compaq, as a perfect gaming rig )

It's simple <= 1.8v no need for active cooling >2v Active cooling recommended.

As everyone keeps saying, normal RAM doesnt need cooling, D9xxx RAM does if you want it to live as long as it *should* do.

Here - 0.99p., in fact, scan do some panaflo ones for around 50p occasionally.
