hello,
What is the normal length of time for which a scanner takes to scan an image?
Mine takes ~30 sec, is this normal?

Depends entirely on the settings, you can get a 200dpi black and white scan done in a few seconds, a hi-res full colour scan can take a lot longer, 30 seconds isn't that bad really.
hello, it's 30sec at 300 dpi BTW
Thanks for your reply lucio; any others?
EDIT: It seems Black and White takes the same length of time as colour on my scanner?

Anybody know where I can find the fastest ones? As I need to scan as many docs as fast as possible.

Looks as if you need an automatic document feeder and a business scanner - be a bit expensive, but if you've an ongoing requirement, worth it.

I'm afraid the answer to your question is a bit like the answer to "How fast will a car go?" Do you mean a Trabant or a Ferrari?
You can get high-end document scanners that will scan an A4 page in a handful of seconds, just like you can get photocopiers that will copy at high speeds. But they can cost thousands.
You could take a look at the HP Scanjet 5590C. It's about £260, and you can get it from (ironically enough), and among others, Scan
That might give you a start point.

This is a cheap one with ADF. I wonder if there is any ADF scanner going for cheaper than this? I already got a cheap Epson printer with CISS :S

& of course it's not just the mechanical scan speed but the transfer speed to the PC.
A lot of scanners that are connected via USB don't use USB 2.0 transfer rates (but there are some that do) but the original USB 12Mbit/s
To give you an idea of what the business ones can do, we have a Xerox C7132 document centre, it'll scan and then e-mail you files of what it scans and takes the time it takes to talk from the copier back to my desk to send a single page through.
It's main advantage is you can stack up 30 odd pages at once and get those sent through in one job.

hello,
Thanks for the input guys!
I have no more than £150 to spend on the scanner. I do not want an all-in one printer or anything, just the scanner.
I've returned the scanner, as I had a little problem with it, so I now have the money to spend on another scanner, or the same one if it turns out the scanning time was actually good.
I'll have a look at more reviews in the meantime.

hello,
I've looked for ages and am finding it pretty difficult to find the fastest possible.
I've decided I'll stick with Canon on this.
Any ideas?

While I wait, is there actually an official 'spec' for scanners describing their scanning time?
