Problems with SATA optical drives?
Hi,
I’m planning a build and am wondering if I should get a SATA or IDE optical drive. Firstly, are there any disadvantages installation wise with getting a SATA (like can Win XP recognice the drive when you install the OS, etc... )?
Secondly, I read somewhere that having a SATA DVD would make your SATA HDDs slower somehow, but I can’t find the page where I read it. I think they said the HDD would be slowed down to the speed of the DVD or something.
Can someone clarify?
Thanks
Re: Problems with SATA optical drives?
It doesn't slow them down but you have to be careful about which drive you choose (as I've recently found out to my chargrin) as they can cause odd incompatibilities with certain motherboards. It's best to go with a drive that others have used successfully with your board. No problems installation wise (multiple systems) though (nForce 4/965 chipsets). The only advantages are the smaller cables and the chance that a parallel drive won't be supported on future motherboards.

I just ditched my PATA DVD drives for a pair of Samsung SH-S203B SATA drives and I'm VERY pleased all around!! VERY quiet, very fast - better and Optiarc...

I have the same. Very pleased with the SH-S203Bs, and they come bundled with an oem version of Nero7.
Had absolutely no probs with installing windows XP off these on my IP35-pro mobo.
