    Decent UPS

    Hi,

Need one for the office - to power 1 1U Dell server, 1 NAS box and 4 desktop-level machines being used as servers. Any ideas? We have a small rack so something rack based would be good...

    Stick with APC

remeber that UPs batteries need servicing / replacement from time to time.

There used to be a guy on ebay who sold nicely refurbished APC units for a reasonable price - his username is hkem.

    Re: Decent UPS

Ta for the advice. Any idea roughly what sort of uptime I would get with the above hardware connected? If I got a 2U 1500VA device, what sort of time would I get out of it?

not 100% sure , there is an uptime calculator on the APc website though. Make sure you dont run any CRT's off the UPS though , it'll drain it very quickly

    Re: Decent UPS

Do you want it to cover short powere cuts/brownouts, keep the server up for extended periods or to initiater safe server shutdown when power failure occurs?

APC are good, but so are Liebert and Merlin-Gerin and all offer a variety a power ratings and hold up times. Price goes up with rating, and with hold up time, so you need to consider the requirements carefully.

(I think APC are made by Merlin Gerin)
