    Big HDs and Win XP.

Just off to the post office depot to pick up my new 160GB HD.

All I need to know, is there any issues that occur with drives of this size and WinXP?? FYI I have all the latest update and SP1 installed.

    Cheers.

I had no problems whatsoever installing pre-SP1 WinXP onto my 160gb SATA Samsung drive. Used the installer to create a partition, no problems at all.

My 250jb corrupted its files twice, here's what WD told me:

"However please not the symptoms you are describing suggest the bios or windows do not support 48 bit LBA, hence the problem may not be the drive, but may be the 137 gig limitation...The motherboard must be able to support 48 bit LBA in order to avid data corruption and data loss as soon as the amount of data on the drive goes over 137 gig (or 128 gig in Windows.)"

Go here http://support.microsoft.com/default...en-us%3B331958 and download the patch!

    Niceone again!

One further question; I have hooked up the new HD, made sure it is set to slave and hooked it to the slave on the IDE cable.
But it is not appearing in 'my computer'.
Do I need another program to format it first?

    Thanks again.

Hehe, you need to go to manage, storage, and partition it from there, but I guess you did that!

your bios needs to suppoirt 48bit LBA to allow partitions of over 128Gb (More accurately, it allows disks of up to 262Tb). XP itself allows partitions of up to 8Tb on FAT32 (with much wasteage, and you need to use an external tool to format as XP will refuse to format FAT32 partitions over 32Gb) or 256Tb on NTFS
