i'd rate my samsung s203b above the optiarc (sony/nec) 7170s I had before it easily
I have a Samsung SH-S183A with the latest (vSB03) firmware and so far it has been very good.....
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.
To be honest, you can't really go by brand. For instance, the Pioneer 111 is considered one of the best burner. On the other hand, earlier 112 were plagued with problems (the one I am using, which was manufactured later seems fine).
As far as I know, the recent Samsung are actually well received amongst 'DVD-RW enthusiasts'. I've read that the latest Optiarc (AD-7190A) is actually a rebadged Lite-On. Take it as you will.
That said, my impression is that picking a DVD-RW these days is almost like picking a 7200RPM HD. Sometime you do end up with one that's problematic, but for most part they are not hugely different.

twin bezel lightscibe power dvd and nero for just over £20
I've had the Pioneer 104, 108, 110, 111 and currently have the 112DBK (PATA) and 212BK (SATA).
I've never had a problem with either of them (touch wood), the drives I currently have run smoothly, they've read everything I've thrown at them, although they can be a bit slow to read the disc upon load and are at times of fast reads/writes slightly loud but great drives all round.
It's all about what you feel comfortable with and what your needs are, for example, is noise a concern? IDE (PATA) or SATA?
Happy hunting!
