Fine? Yeah, but there is no reason to go with them with NEC and the big P on the market.

Get either a NEC (now NEC+Sony) or a Pioneer. They are both pretty much the industry standards when it comes to DVDRW drives

Got my vote for Nec+Sony (sold under the Optiarc brand). I had a Samsung and it was rubbish, maybe a bad sample, but I won't touch them again.

    Re: Best value DVD-RW

To be honest, you can't really go by brand. For instance, the Pioneer 111 is considered one of the best burner. On the other hand, earlier 112 were plagued with problems (the one I am using, which was manufactured later seems fine).

As far as I know, the recent Samsung are actually well received amongst 'DVD-RW enthusiasts'. I've read that the latest Optiarc (AD-7190A) is actually a rebadged Lite-On. Take it as you will.

That said, my impression is that picking a DVD-RW these days is almost like picking a 7200RPM HD. Sometime you do end up with one that's problematic, but for most part they are not hugely different.

    Re: Best value DVD-RW

    I've had the Pioneer 104, 108, 110, 111 and currently have the 112DBK (PATA) and 212BK (SATA).

I've never had a problem with either of them (touch wood), the drives I currently have run smoothly, they've read everything I've thrown at them, although they can be a bit slow to read the disc upon load and are at times of fast reads/writes slightly loud but great drives all round.

It's all about what you feel comfortable with and what your needs are, for example, is noise a concern? IDE (PATA) or SATA?

    Happy hunting!

Yes, Samsung or Asus is FINE. I don't like Optiarc. If you want to pay more for Pioneer, good for you. Samsung SHS203 is also pretty quiet and dones the job. £18.44 including VAT seems like a good deal.

Yes, I know they are FINE (ISN'T CAPS COOL?!?! ), but IMO there is better out there.

Don't mind me giving my opinion do you?

Read the specs (read/burn speeds, data transfer rates, Buffer sizes etc) for the drives mentioned, but if the games you are playing rely on real time CDROM access, you would be better off copying the CD/DVD to a hard drive and reading the data from there.
